Basebal BY PETE FEHELEY Sports Editor Carolina's baseball team picked up two more victories this week by defeating Wofford 16-1 on Tuesday and West Virginia 12-2 on Wed nesday. Tim Lewis earned the victory in the Wofford game, allowing only one hit in six innings while striking out eight batters. Relievers Scott Thomas and Mike Cromer finished the game. The Gamecocks amassed 18 hits against four Wofford pitchers, with Steve King getting four and Mark Van Bever having three. Steve Cook hit a two-run homer in the third inning and Jim Pankovits 4 added another two-run homer in the third fourth inning. Carolina took command of the game early, scoring five runs in the first inning and getting four more runs in the third. Greg Ward relieved in the sixth inning while Mike Cromer and Tommy Luckstone finished up for the Gamecocks. John Ruzicka homered for the Mquntaineers only run off Lavigne. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks used the long ball hitting of Hank Small and Jim Pankovits to demolish West Virginia starter Bill Keeler. Small walloped a two-run homer in the second inning, an inning in which the Gamecocks scored five times. Pankovits crashed a three Chicks play Carolina's women's basketball team, still alive despite finishing a disappointing fourth in the recent state tournament, travels to Elon, N.C., to compete in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women regional tournament beginning Thursday. The Chicks meet host Elon College in the opening round at 10 a.m., Thursday. The regional winner advances to the women's national championship tournament scheduled for Madison College at Harrisonburg, Va., later this month. Carolina, 18-10, lost to Elon in a previous meeting, 90-79, last month in the finals of the Elon Invitational Tournament. Three teams from last week's state women's tournament ad vanced to the regionals. Since Anderson College, winner of the state championship, is a junior college and as a result ineligible for the AIAW regionals, the South nnis team V two position. Carolina overwhelmed Converse 5 in doubles, playing pro-sets. The Chicks, coached by Pam Backhaus, defeated Voorhees 81-62 and Coastal Carolina 66-47, to advance to the semi-finals of the state tournament, but then lost 66 55 to South Carolina State and 82-57 to Winthrop. Usually high scoring Charlene DuBose of Darlington injured a knee early in the Win throp game and her availability for regional play is questionable. Denise Nanney, a junior from Spartanburg who has been the Chicks' top rebounder all season, also took over the scoring lead after 28 games, edging ahead of Miss DuBose with an average of 17.32 to 17.25. Miss Nanney's rebounding average is 12.4. Martha Suber of Whitmire is averaging 15.6 points per game for the Chicks and is the number two rebounder with 7.3 average. ictorious vlorman, the second-seeded loubles team, teamed together and von 8-3. The players are etting together and solidifying as I team." Porter added, "The win vas a good psychological start for he season. It will instill con idence in the players."
