Mark Leary Asst. Sports Editor While two of the best forwards in the nation were putting on a scoring show in the Coliseum last Wednesday only 7,831 fans were on hand to see the show and also the Gamecocks' 80-75 win over Canisius. Alex English hit on 11 of 19 field goal attempts and scored 27 points. He also pulled down 12 rebounds. On the other team one of the nation's best, Larry Fogle, was the games' high scorer as he tallied 32 points and captured 11 rebounds. What was the reason for the smallest crowd in Coliseum history? Was it the fact that the fans were not interested in the Gamecocks' competition? Most people were in their rooms or wherever they could find a television set watching South Carolina's other basketball power--Clemson. A lot of people were watching the Tigers to see if they really were for real. Clemson was playing at Maryland and if they could play Lefty Driesell's gang close they were the team that Clemson fans have been saying they are. Well they did it, they gave Maryland everything they could handle and more. Clemson was in the game all the way to the end and if they hadn't made the mistakes of a young ball club at the end of the game they, believe it or not, would have captured a piece of the highly coveted Atlantic Coast Con ference crown. The second-ranked Terps finally came out a 70-64 winner at the buzzer. Congratulations are in order, though. Who in their right mind would have thought Clemson would have been playing for the ACC championship at the end of the ACC regular season? They did a great job and no wonder so many people stayed home to see Clemson on the tube. One of the biggest sports arguments going on within South Carolina is who would win a match-up between Carolina and Clemson in basketball. Depending on the outcome of certain events it is possible that the two arch rivals could meet in basketball. Who knows what would happen with the selection committee on March 6. Will Carolina get a NCAA big with a record of (hopefully)18-8 or will they end up in the NIT. Also, what will happen to Clemson in the ACC post season tour nament? Will they get a bid to the NCAA playoffs by virtue of winning the tournament or will they also end up in the NIT? If both teams from Carolina end up in New York for the NIT the confrontation just might happen. If it does happen, it will solve many a long-standing argument of die-hard Carolina and Clemson fans. u4umana The Hospital Company We will be on campus March 11, 1975 to interview candidates for financial management training program leading to the position of hospital business manager or controller. Then came the running events, and in a flash, the Tigers found themselves buried under the rubble of a 85-56 blitz. The Tigers, under the direction of I.M. Ibrahim (better known for developing the soccer powerhouse), took an early 5-0 lead in the pole vault. Walter Credle, clearing 13'6", set a home field record in wrapping up the pole vault before any running event was completed. Clemson continued to roar and captured first and third spots in the javelin, with Carolina's Lou DeChicchio grabbing bridesmaid slot with a 189' 1 %" pitch. Clemson also took one and three in the discus, as Gamecock Buck Thompson heaved 149'9" to finish second. Carolina's soul patrol of Ron Adams, Titus Briggs, and Berle Stocks broke the Tiger field monopoly as placed 1-2-3 in the long jump, Adams flying at 23'9". Carolina also slew the Tigers at the triple jump, with Adams one at'40' 1", Stocks two at 45' 2", and Steve Wilson three at 43' 11". Carolina won first and second in the shot. Jerry Morrison posting a 49'11" toss and Jeff Fuge boosted a 49'4" effort. A bad handoff in the 440 relay enabled Clemson to notch a 42.6 second finish. The Tigers con tinued to make a mild move in the running events by skunking the Gamecocks 1-2-3 in the 100 yard dash. Clemson closed out the field schedule by taking 1-2 in the high jump, aided by their school record holder Ed Fern's 6'6" mark. Ron Ther STEVE I cks down ( Adams placed third. USC's milers blanked Clemson in the event, paced by Don Layden's 4:19.8 minute mark. Right behind him were Bob Day (4:20) and Wayne Foster (4:21.5). Spectators were anxiously awaiting the 120-yard high hurdles to catch a glimpse of tall and talented Gamecock, Bernie Allen. A glimpse was about all they got. Despite being hampered by a slight toe injury, which kept him out of other events, Allen darted to a 15.3 second first place mark. Clemson captured the remaining two places. Carolina's complete superiority on the track was now becoming dreadfully evident to the Tiger athletes. USC ran up a 50.7-second first in the 440-yard dash behind Paul McLeod, and Mark Gediman rode to second on a 50.9 seconds. John Brown (1:55.8) and Keith Norvel (1:57.2) raced to first and second in the 880. Alan Shoultz swept to a 54.4-second first in the 440-yard hurdles. Milton Reid and Gediman finished at :22.2 and :22.4 respectively in the 220-yard dash to wrap up one and two. Carolina polished off the Tigers cleanly with a 3:21-minute win in the mile relay. "Any time you wn, you have to be pleased," said USC coach Bill McClure, "but when you beat Clemson, it's especially satisfying." McClure indicated that he thought his team may have suffered somewhat as several of his athletes participated in events other than the ones they were best suited for. "For instance, we had three-milers running in the mile," he noted. McClure was quick to praise Clemson. "They've gotta real good, strong program coming up. We found out just how strong they are in their field events." Carolina's next test comes next Saturday with a home meet against East Carolina and Eastern Kentucky. CHIP PREZIOSO Member of U.S.C.
