QPinion Editorials Black Black Week at USC will begin Sunday with activities lasting all of next week. This annual event affords the op portunity to take a look at the contributions of blacks not only at USC, but also throughout the world. It is now almost 110 years since the Civil War, but only a little more than 10 years since the first black was admitted to this University. In those short 10 years blacks have made an uncountable number of con tributions to the University, and undoubtedly will make an infinite number more in the years to come. In the same manner, relations between races have improved vastly, although it is still far from perfect. To illustrate how much race relations have improved in a comparatively short period of time, The Gamecock reprints the following column which appeared in this paper May 21, 1954, shortly after the Supreme Court made its famous decision against segregation of public schools. The column is as follows: Chief Justice Warren has said segregation in public schools is not constitutional, and the Chief Justice is an honorably man. The South has spent millions on equalized education, but this is unconstitutional, says Justice Black, and he is an honorable man. The South has preserved and protected the principle that a man is as good as he can prove himself to be, but the South has violated the 14th amendment, and Justice Clark, an honorable man, has said so. The South has spent 300 years in civilizing and rearing a savage race (a process which required some 2,000 years for other races, who had to fit to survive), but the Justices have said that her procedure is unconstitutional, and they are honorable men, all of them. Lest you be misled, I come to praise segregation, not to join in funeral proceedings. Week 1 protested freight-rate discrimination for 50 years and were finally vindicated; began school equalization and per mitted Negro jurors; and was beginning to benefit from a greatly improved Negro population--from the end of the War until Monday, May 17th, 1954, progress was made on the basis that the majority rule, through their representatives. However, the Supreme Court has now ruled that in the in terest of social justice, it will no longer be necessary to ratify a change in the con stitution; all that is required is that a citizen be sincere and imposed on by the majority, and the Justices will rein terpret the constitution, and, as any fool knows, they are honorable men. Notwithstanding, they are aware of the inconveniences that may affect these newly unsegregated people, but segregation is un constitutional. They are aware that a principled people respect and honor tradition, per se, but segregation is un constitutional. They are aware of Lt. Gov. Timmerman and others' progosals to provide separate private schools and un segregated public schools, but segregation is un constitutional. There is little we can do; the Supreme Court Justices and the NAACP have said so, and they are very constitutional men. Now, in all fairness, we must examine this unanimous decision from an international standpoint; no doubt it will cause many communist copy writer a sleepless night in order to revise their propaganda. Also, it will give the U.S. another selling point, especially when dealing with Asia. But, actual non-segregation is a high price to pay for the support of some communists who couldn't care less that members of the colored race have to go to separate schools they probably think that they' re damned fortunate to have a school to attend! Obviously Dr. Zworykin is taking i far too pessimistic outlook on the nonster he helped to create. On he whole, television programming s diverse and educational for the ivid TV addict. In any normal iewing day there are many shows hat do much to add to the quality )f life. In fact, often it is more .ducational to spend the day taring at the television set than Foing to classes. In one morning of watching talk shows, comedies and game shows I believe I learned more than I have all semester of going to classes. For instance, in my ehtics course we are studying about Aristotle and his distinctions between voluntary and involuntary actions. For at least three class periods the professor tried to teach what constitutes a voluntary action and what constitutes an involuntary action. Now, the professor could have made it much easier on his class and on himself had he just assigned us to watch one episode of "The Three Stooges," which is exactly what I did on Monday. When Moe grabs Larry by the hair and bangs his head against Curley's, it is definitely an example of voluntary action on the part of Moe since he is aware what is going on at all times and takes responsibility for his action. However, when Moe inad vertently bangs Larry on the head when he is walking with a long board over his shoulder, that is obviously an involuntary action and Moe cannot be held ac countable because it was an ac cident, something he did not intend to do. think ERA? Just by watching "The Three Stooges," a show that is not even intended to be educational, I have learned something in maybe 10 or 15 minutes that might take three of four class periods for my professor to get across. And I think there is no contest as to what is more entertaining--the Stooges or my professor. So, only using this one course and one television show as an example, it is easy to see how television is an educational tool and that a mor ning of television entertainment is often as beneficial as attending classes. And it is a lot more fun, also. And everyone knows that morning programming is much inferior to evening programming, when you can learn how the German's lost the war by watching "Hogan's Heroes." You can learn how life really is in the South by watching "The Andy Griffith Show." Or you can learn about the realities of newspaper life by watching "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" every Friday. In short, television is a much more educational medium than Zworykin gives it credit for being. What college student would ever think about doing without it? Doing without classes, yes.
