Boswell speaks BY BILLY BAKER Of The Gamecock staff Tom Boswell is known for his 'reluctance to be interviewed, but in the early hours of Tuesday mor ning high in clouds between Toledo and Columbia he actually started a conversation about this year's club. "I guess everyone wonders why we have so much trouble winning on the road," Boswell said, "There really is no team dissension because we all play hard together on the court when the game begins," he saiid. A few hours earlier USC had dropped a 78-72 decision to Toledo. "I really think our problem is inconsistency and mental at titude," Boswell said. "I mean like Jerry West and Oscar Robertson have about the same amount of talent but the one who wants it the most will usually have the better game and win," he said. "Sometimes I play as hard as I can and I find myself shook up from losing," Boswell said. "Tonight I played as hard as I have all season. I was really putting out," he said. Tom Boswell admired Brian Winters, last year's star guard for USC, who was the first player ever to receive a no-cut contract from the Los Angeles Lakers. "We don't have the leadership that Winters provided last year," Boswell said. "Winters was a hell of a cat," he said. "I could really get into him as a person and as a player," Boswell said, "I could listen to him. He would know what to do in certain situations. To me Brian Winters was the perfect idea of what a college basketball player should be," he said. Boswell stands 6-9 and weighs 225 pounds. He describes himself as a team player. "I try to be a team player," he said. "I am the teams leading scorer but if you notice I am third in the number of shots attempted. I am not a selfish player," he said. Last year McGuire said he needed a big man desperately. Tom Boswell became the answer to his crisis and Boswell claims this put a lot of pressure on him. "People expected me to live up to a label," Boswell said. "It's hard to say what I have ac complished really. I guess if we get into the playoffs I will feel like I had a part in the team's success but you never know what is going to happen," he said. There is talk that Boswell wants to turn pro after this season. He says that it will depend on certain cir cumstances. "If the money is there and it is any kind of a good contract I will probably take it," he said. "But I can still come back for next season," he said. "I really think this team has as much talent as the teams of the past at USC," he said. "We have the ability to beat everybody in the country with the exception of UCLA, Louisville, Indiana, and a few teams like that." Boswell turned to this reporter and asked, "What would you do with this team?" "It would be great to see us start this Saturday's game in a man to man press against Marquette," I replied. "That would raise the hair on Al McGuire's head because we are usually a very easy team to scout, because we do things in a traditional manner." Tom Boswell just smiled and went back to seep.n Picturi Some inner cities have special schools. For little boys who don't talk. Not mute little boys. But children so withdrawn so afraid of failure, they cannot make the slightest attempt to do anything at which they might fail. Some don't talk. Some don't listen. Most don't behave. And then the miracle. Little boys who had never said anything, looked at the pictures and began to talk. They said ''This is my house." "This is my dog." "This is where I like to hide." They bean to explinn Ion .7 % to describe, to communicate. And once the chan nels of communication had been opened, they began to learn. What does Kodak stand to gain from this? Well, we're showing how our products can help a teacher -and maybe creating a whole new market. And we're also cultivating young customers who will someday buy their own-cameras and film. But more than that, we're cultivating alert, educated citizens. Who will someday be responsible for our society. After all, our business depends on society. So we care what happens to it.
