Mark Leary Asst. Sports Editor The crowd At Notre Dame I saw what a crowd can do for its team. If you can imagine a louder crowd than at our Coliseum Notre Dame was the place to find it. There the response to their cheerleaders was almost unbelievable. After watching the dedicated many sleep out for tickets for the all important'Marquette game I couldn t even imagine how loud Carolina's crowd could be if they wanted to be. The crowd means so much to the teams in any sport and most of all basketball. I would like nothing more than to see the Gamecocks crowd come alive for the Marquette game. I just don't mean for the last three or four minutes when its do or die for theGamecocks but for the entire game. You might go home a little worn out or even a little hoarse but I'm sure you will feel like you had a big part in the game and maybe even the victory. 20 wins? Is it still possible for a twenty win season? This reporter says, yes. After watching the Gamecocks come alive on the road against Dayton on Saturday night my faith in Carolina has been renewed. After a one point lead by the Gamecocks at the half I was really worried. Much to my great glee the Gamecocks looked like the team that was to be "Top Five In 75" as they broke the game open in the second half and ran away to a 20 point win. Eventhough Saturdays victory was only the fourth win on the road out of ten games it proved that maybe just maybe the Gamecocks are ready to make their move. Today's contest against Toledo will be no pushover. Toledo has the potential to down Carolina if the Gamecocks do not play with the same spark that they played with at Dayton. Toledo only lost to Marquette by three on the Warriors home court. All in all the road to twenty wins will be no piece of cake. It will take a super effort on the part of the Gamecocks, the same kind of effort it would take for Carolina to get past half the teams in the Eastern Regionals of the NCAA playoffs. Can the Gamecocks win twenty? Can Carolina get the NCAA bid? Can the Gamecocks do well in the NCAA playoffs if they get the bid? Only time will tell. Intramurals Another game packed the spectator area of the PE building. Was it a group of pros putting on an exhibition? No, it was just another very exciting intramural basketball game. Two outstanding intramural basketball powers Pi Kappa Phi and Kappa Alpha Psi fought it out on the court. Pi Kappa Phi upset the previously unbeaten Kappa Alpha Psi team by an impressive 17 point margin. The teams in intramural basketball are of excellent quality and many people can hardly wait for the playoffs. A new format set up by the intramural department should provide much excitement for the many teams. Every team with a winning record will be in the tournament. Just one more reason why the intramural program at Carolina is tops.
