Graduation t claimed four girls from last year's 6 club and two girls left the team over the summer. C "It's a beginning team," Tim- F mermans said. "However, I like to a work with this team because they f practice hard and always give 100 t per cent," she said. - "It takes an especially talented girl to practice two hours a day five, days a week all year round," Timmermans added. "This group has much potential," she said. This Saturday the. women's gymnastics team is hosting a tri meet at 2 p.m. in the'P.E. Center. Appalachian St. and Georgia Southern will be the competition. Admission is free. The season began for the gymnastics team on Feb. 1 at Furman. Western Kentucky won the meet with a score of 83.65, USC was second with 68.10 and host Furman had 65.45. Patti Morris, a freshman from Columbia, placed second in all around competition with a com posite of 29.65. Wendy Parks, a sophomore from Columbia placed Short courses As society becomes more and more sports saturated, it is not surprising to find the average Joe trying to reach the nirvana 'of in stant superstaidom. Nine times out of 10, though, application of unpolished skills quickly knocks him for a loop. Smashing his racket to bits, he sees his visions of being the next Jimmy Connors disintegrate as he.double-faults for the 25th straight time. Or his hands dangle uselessly at his sides after having Attempted to kung-fu a brick wall to death. Such is the fate of the novice. However, help is on the way. Starting on Monday, February 17, the University is offering a host of short sport courses designed to acquaint the beginner with the basic skills involved in each respective activity. The programs are open to students and faculty and their families, free of charge. On the roster are: archery, backgammon, bridge, modern dancing, judo, quilting, racquet ball, soccer, tumbling, and wrestling. In addition, children's and adult's courses are provided in both swimming and tennis. Senior lifesaving Is also an option. Harriet Clewis, working ex tensively with the short courses, points out that each entry will continue through a six-week span. Most will meet for one hour per week, with a few courses meting for two hours weekly. Clewis cited last semester's program as being highly successful in which most classes were filled up. She noted that each course is open on a first come, first-served basis, due to a limited number of courts available (e.g. racquetball). "We're ex pecting a good turnout," she said, "'and from calls we're getting, people definitely are interested. I think it's a worthwhile experience ...and it's free." On Feb. 7 the Chicks defeated Vinthrop in a dual meet, 62.06 7.86. Patti Morris claimed a first olace in four events and was the utstanding performer of the meet vith a composite score of 26.76. 2arks had three seconds and one hird to finish second in all around coring with a production of 20.32. Only two members of the team ompete in all events offered in ,ymnastics competition. Morris ind Parks participate in vaulting, loor exercise, balance beam, and ineven bars each time the team erforms. Last year's team finished eventh in the Regionals after vinning the state championship vith a record of 8-4. The gymnastics program has come a long way in seven years when you consider. that Tim mermans began coaching with just one girl seven years ago. "We have gone from a club sport to a varsity sport in these years," said Timmermans. "The skill of the girls has really improved a great deal," she said. Timmermans said that she has been offered jobs in other schools, but refused them because the facilities at Carolina for gym nastics are "just super." There are ten girls on the team.
