DR. HERR Faculty Sei to discuss 1 From Page 1 President Leigh Leventis said 60 per cent of the students were in favor of a sgrading system with plusses, B+, C+, D+. The NC system was preferred by 53 per cent of the students who respon ded. Leventis said the conslusion drawn, from this survey, which is to be presented to the Faculty Senate, is that a decisive majority prefers a grading system with pluses, whether it be the NC system or the proposed D and F system. The Rules Subcommittees and the Scholastic Standings and Petition Committee worked together in proposing the new grading system. Dr. E.F. Thompson, chairman of the Rules Subcommittees, said the present grading system does not reflect how many times a student made an NC in a course before he finally made the grade he wanted. Thompson said if a student has a C near the end of the semester and does not want that as a final grade, he can intentionally fall the final exam. The student can do this, take the course over, unti he gets the grade he wants, he said. Thus, under the system the student can manipulate his own GPR, Thompson said. The new grading system would aiso allow each department to set GANMI The Gamecock Is the official ste. of South Carolina and is publishei Thursdays. during the .fall and ig during the summer by the USC muncations. In the proposed grading system a student could have less than a 2.00 GPR in his major and still be graduated if his respective department so chose, said Thompson. Richard Kherlopian, chairman of the Scholastic Standings and Petitions Committee, said the NC does not' allow students to take courses outside of their majors because of fear of receiving an NC for the course. Most students perceive the NC as an F and vir tually all graduate schools com pute the NC as an F, Kherlopian said. Kherlopian is skeptical about the half-grade option proposed by the new grading system. "It's pretty damn hard to differentiate bet ween B, B+, and B-," he said. No A+'s could be given because their value would be 4.50 on a 4.00 scale. The pluses would raise the GPR's of most students, thus the criteria for honors would have to be raised, Kherloplan said. Barry H. Rosen, assistant to President Patterson, said he believes the proposed system is more fair than the present system. By being able to give a studeist a D instead of an NC, the student is allowed to rid himself of a course that he doesn't like or can't handie, Rosen said.
