USC fighi jmx agai BY MARK LEARY Asst. Sports Editor Carolina will be off on the road again this weekend as they will take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame on the same court that the Irish defeated UCLA on, late in January, by the score of 84-78. After that all important victory over UCLA the Irish's head coach Richard "Digger" Phelps said, "The only thing we n4eded was some confidence and I can't think of a better way to get it than by beating a great team like UCLA." Notre Dame's record which now stands at 11-6 is a deceiving one as they have lost five of their six games to teams which were ranked in the top ten in the nation. Notre Dame's losses came at the hands of Indiana, UCLA, Maryland, Kentucky, Marquette and Pittsburgh. The Irish have a younger team than most of their opponents. Phelps commented, "We're playing three freshmen, five sophomores and two seniors as our starters and top reserves." Phelps continued, "We've had some outstanding contributions lately by nearly every player and I hope we are on our way." The standout player for the Irish this year is Sophomore Adrian Dantley a 6-5 forward from Washington D.C. Dantley is presently leading the nation with a 32.1 scoring average. Dantley's best night this season was in a losing cause against Kentucky as he scored 39 points and pulled down 17 rebounds. Dantley who is also recognized as an excellent defensive player had a major role in the Irish's upset of UCLA at South Bend. Dantley netted 32 points and played outstanding defense as he limited the Bruins top scorer, Dave Meyers, to just one point in the first half. The Irish also boast two double figure scorers in sophomore for ward Bill Paterno and senior guard Dwight Clay. Presently Paterno is averaging 14.3 for the Irish. Phelps said of Paterno, "Bill is an outstanding scoring threat who does an excellent job on both boards." Clay, with two years of varsity experience behind him, is averaging 11.9 for Notre Dame. Clay is the one of co-captains of this years Irish team and is nick named the "Ice Man" for his clutch shooting. The most memorably of last second shots Clay has taken in his career at Notre Dame was his last second P.O. 8.: esi Womens Educati non-profit agenc * Fr'ee Pregancy T * Free Abortion Ref~ * Referrals to Social * Problem Pregnanc * Family Planning Ii if re a woman and has onlServices to tal '1b nmnber to call is 779.s - Ae ocleck caD 254 ts-road nst Irish Adrian Dantley shot that ended UCLA's 88 game winn streak last year. The Gamecocks have played three common opponents and as of Wednesday nights contest with Pittsburgh the opponents in common will be four. The Gamecocks defeated Princeton 65 48 while Notre Dame also downed Princeton 80-66. Another victory in common was both teams victories over Davidson. The Gamecocks defeated Davidson 85-68 while the Irish also downed the Wildcats by the score of 89-73. Both teams also share a common loss in Marquette. The Gamecocks were downed 69 60 by the Warriorers while Marquette also knocked off the Irish by the score of 71-68. Pitt sburgh, the Gamecocks opponent Wednesday night, upset the Irish in an overtime thriller 84-77. Carolina will be on the spot Saturday to defeat the Irish on their homecourt and at the same time gain some confidence by winning the "big game" on the road. Without a doubt Carolina will have to play their best game of the year to defeat Notre Dame. The Gamecocks who now stand at 12-5 on the season will have to win eight of the remaining nine games to reach the twenty win goal this season. * FREE!
