!uspired I 'homesich BY GEORGE MORRIS Of The Gamecock staff Houston built up a 12 point lead midway through the secopd half and held off a strong Carolina rally to-, upset the Gamecocks 90-4 Saturday at Hofeinz Pavilion. Carolina, whose record dropped to 2-4, cut the lead to two points on three occasions late in the game, but failed to ever score the tying basket. The Gamecock's last chance came after Cougar guard Ed Riska missed the second of a one-and-one foul opportunity and USC trailed by three points, 85-2, with 1:23left in the game. But when Mike Dunleavy missed a 22-foot jump shot from the top of the key, Carolina was forced'to foul to get the ball back. This sent Riska, Houston's second worst foul shooter on the year, to the line. Riska converted three of four attempts to end Carolina's fading hopes. Houston coach Gut Lewis said getting the big lead was what won the game for his Cougars. USC has sec BY GEORGE MORRIS Of The Gamecock staff While the fans at the game and the television audience saw a lot of action at Saturday's Carolina Houston game, there were some more action after the game ended that people missed. Having spent an afternoon dodging all sorts of debris thrown at them by the Houston fans, USC players and coaches found the trip to the dressing room equally un pleasant. Houston graduate assistant coach Willie Butler, elated over the Cougars' 90-84 upset of the Gamecocks, decided to remind Alex English of a statement he made after last year's USC Houston game. What followed was an unfortunate incident involving players, coaches and police. Following Carolina's 104-86 win over Houston, in which English scored 37 points, he was quoted as saying something to the effect that the Houston big men didn't move too well in that game. Baxter, who found the opportunity too irresistable to pass up, asked English what he thought of URGENTLY N People with Mono to aid in Medical If you now have or have had wil may qualify for $80.00 per week f< 3437 Mon.- Fri. for more inform Serologicala L Suite1 2719 Middl CoIa, S.C. The win gave the Cougars a 9-8 record, the first time Houston has bein over the .500 mark this year. For Carolina the loss was the fifth in eight road games this year. "The game was alright, but we didn't play well enough to win. Our guys never gave up and I love them for it," said Carolina coach Frank McGuire. Houston opened the game in a sticky man-to-man defense which gave Carolina trouble throughout the game. USC was unable to get a field goal for over four-and-a-half minutes and turnovers hampered the Gamecocks all afternoon. Carolina threw the ball away 11 times in the first half, three times resulting in easy layups for Houston. About the only bright spot for USC in the first half was the play of Alex English, who scored 19 of his game high 25 points. But as a team ,ond battle Houston's big men in this game. Now police stepped in and or dered Carolina players to their dressing room and USC coach Frank McGuire began telling one policeman not to push his players. This degenerated to the point where McGuire and the policeman stood inches from each other engaged in a shouting match. Finally another policeman calmed his partner and McGuire left to meet his players, already in the dressing room. Just after McGuire left the Houston team stormed out of their dressing room, but Houston assistant coach Donnie Schverak ordered them back. McGuire was incredulous over the incident at first, but managed to joke about it later. "That coach came after English and said "Do our big men move good now?" He tried to provoke something on the way to the dressing room," McGuire said. Later, when he heard about the Houston players leaving their dressing room, McGuire brushed off the incident. Houston's coach Guy Lewis didn't know anything about until reporters told him later. EEDED! mucleosis Rmsarch. hin the past 2 weeks, Mono you wr s hours of your time.
