Fitzgerel, USN (ret.) was awarded the Legion of Merit in a brief ceremony Thur sday afternoon in Hamilton Ar mory. Capt. H. D. Mann, commander of the Navy ROTC unit, presented the decoration to Capt. Fitzgerel while the,vildshipman battalion stood at attention. Capt. Fitzgerel received the award For his meritorious service as commander of the unit from 1970-1974. Following the short ceremony, Capt. Fitzgerel was escorted by Capt. Mann to a four-man sideboy detail. The honor detail has been used traditionally to pipe a disembarking captain from his ship. Guests at the function included: David D. Husband, Keith E. Davis, Col. Elbert L. Mott, USAF: Oswald F. Schuette, G. P. Winton and E. H. Beardsley. The following officers attached to the Navy unit were also presented: CMDR. Majors, USN, Executive Officer; Maj. Gressley, USMC, Marine Officer Instructor; Lt. Arnow, USN, sneior instructor ; LCDR. Durham, USN, junior in structor; Lt. Lines, USN, sophomore instrucotr; Lt. Dickerson, USN, freshman in structor. Beginning his career in 1942, Capt. Fitzgerel served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam conflict. Previous duty assignments include: Executive Director, Navy Department of Legislative Affairs; Chief of Staff, Naval Support Activities, DaNang, Republic of Vletnmam; Commanding Officer, .
