Mark Leary Asst. Sports Editor Intramurals dilemma Intramural sports at Carolina are becoming a very big part of the average student's college life. To be exact, 4,700 men and women are currently competing in events ranging from ping pong to basketball. But all is not roses in the intramural department. Problems with fighti and with who has te final say in decisions seem to be the rule rather than the exception. I believe the problem is a two-fold one. First, Robert Dalrymple (director of the USC intramural program) should have absolute authority and second Dalrymple should look into the possibility of dropping the all-sports championship races from each division. Dalrymple ran into a problem of not hav' absolute authority in the ATO case of last fall. A man committee formed by Dalrymple came up with a punishment after all. the facts were in, and Dalrymple acted on their recommendations. To the great disbelief of myself and many others, two lawyers, one from the University and one from ATO bargained and in the end made a mockery of Dalrymple's decision. To state it quickly, they overturned the brunt of the punishment. Darymple who is a very reasonable man should not be overruled without just cause-be it by two lawyers or be it by the student courts. I strongly believe that if Dalrymple had absolute authority the intramural program would be much better. In the case of the all-sports championship races, the intramural department should consider doing away with it. Recently while talking with the Asst. Sports Information Director from Marshall he commented that his college went through the same problems that Carolina has encountered. The way Marshall solved the problem of fighting was by doing away with the all sports championship races. It is only natural that the intramural program would run into problems in this area. Whenever you have a heated race, to a common goal, between groups of men, tempers are bound to flare. We are lucky to have such a good intramural program at Carolina and we should strive to keep it this way. Let's get things back on a friendly level of competition and do away with the hostilities. If problems do arise and people get out of hand, as sometimes they do, let Dalrymple have the last word on the punishment. The Chicks Congratulations are to be extended to the Carolina women's basketball team. Their victory over Anderson, 8043, was not only an exciting one but it was also a step towards more recognition. It was interin to listen to the St. Louis center comment loudly and in great surprise on the abilities of the women on the court. It was amazing to him and the small crawd present, with what great accuracy Denise Naney constantly canned 20-25 footers in collecting 22 - points. Maybe more of these double headers are in order. Sports Editor The Carolina Gamecocks, behind the 17-point second half per formance of Nate Davis, broke open a game in which they were behind at the end of the first half and ran away with a 76-60 victory over a stubborn St. Louis squad. Davis, who scored 19 points, came alive in the second half as he constantly hit on sky-high jumpers from the 20-foot range. Tom Boswell, with a game high of 24 points, played a steady game as he tallied ten points in the first half and 14 in the second along with pulling down 13 rebounds.
