All three men were paraded into the President's of fice, where the Board met Wednesday, to be interviewed by the Board. While the Board did not say what went on behind the closed doors, some educated guesses can be made from what the three men who were interviewed have been saying. Carlen has said all along that he will come to USC only as long as he is both coach and athletic director so that he can "control his destiny," to use his terminology. In other words, he would like to have a deal something like Dietzel has had the past nine years. McGuire, meanwhile, in his 25th year of coaching, the athletic director's job would be a nice position to fall back on after his retirement, or even just as a nice job to moonlight at for a couple of years. Player, who has not been doing much other than trying to convince the Board to make a decision that he is the "man," simply wants to be put into the Cockpit, as his bumper stickers indicate. And Dietzel, the fourth man in this intrigue, is sitting back at the Roundhouse wondering-when the Board will make a decision so he can either continue his work as athletic director or get the hell out of town. Since the Board is havirg such a difficult time making a decision, it might be wise to make some comments for them to keep in mind. The first thing to think about is whether it would be possible to keep both McGuire and Dietzel around at the same time. Dietzel, even being the good Christian man he is, must be wishing some kind of evil on McGuire for going around asking for Dietzel's job. For Dietzel to do anything else would be against human nature. So if the Board would decide to keep Dietzel as athletic director feelings between the athletic and basketball offices would be at an all-time low. Realistically, one of them would have to leave. Look at McGuire's record and guess which one would be the logical choice. McGuire has actually been placed in an unfortunate situation as far as his relations with Dietzel are con cerned. He has repeatedly said that he is not trying to get Dietzel fired, but only wants to be kept in mind by the Board should it decide not to keep Dietzel. Logically McGuire's position is sound. He probably should be the athletic director instead of someone coming from the cutside, like Carlen, if Dietzel is not retained. However, by having to show an interest in a job that is still Dietzel's, McGuire has to step on Diet zel's toes. Logically Dietzel should be retained based on his prior record as an athletic director. But realistically both McGuire and Dietzel cannot stay. .T ,1 NA.. A&ON ra , 1 McGuie' Board's The arrival of Frank McGuire at Wednesday's meeting of the USC Board of Trustees seems to have further complicated an already complex issue, that of who will be the next head football coach and the next athletic director at USC. McGuire has for some time ex pressed an interest in the athletic director's post, a job which Texas Tech coach Jim Carlen also desires. Carlen and former Lower Richland High School coach Mooney Player are main con tenders for the head coaching position. Up to now, McGuire's efforts to secure the job have been low key. Wednesday, however, McGuire appeared at the Board meeting in which Carlen and Player were being interviewed and told Tmro OStO ByA FRE Oran s interest possible c reporters that he had asked for the job as athletic director. "They didn't tell me what would be decided, but I asked for what I wanted. They asked me questions and they were very nice. Nobody threw anything," he said. Earlier in the day USC assistant basketball coach Don Walsh visited the meeting of the Board's Intercollegiate Activities Com mittee. When asked why he went to the meetings, he said: "I came just to make my feelings known, that's all. They haven't reached a stage where they should be commented on yet. I spoke from a basketball aspect and from the aspect that if there are going to be any replacements made in the athletic directorship that coach McGuire wants to be considered." "I've been building buildings and things and they want to bring in some guy that I don't even know his name (Carlen)."McGuire added with a smile, "I've been around for thirty years and if I don't know athletics I don't know who does." McGuire continued, "Of curse I would continue coaching basket ball. McGuire's appearance throws new problems into the decisions the Board must make and raises some interesting questions. It is no secret that Carlen would like the job of athletic director as well as that of head coach. Now that McGuire has publicly thrown his name in the hat for the job, the board is faced with the dilemna of losing Carlen as coach if he.is not given the athletic directorship as well. McGuire and Player are close personal friends and though Player would not state who he preferred at that post, it is evident from his statements to the press, that he would be more happy with McGuire. "When I found out it might become open, I applied on October 31, " McGuire said. He added, "All the time I said, if it became available I wanted the job. I didn't campaign for the job." McGuire said, "After being here from 11 years you should be con sidered. I should hope I would be." McGuire ended with the comment that he didn't believe it was right to express his preference for the new coach. "All I did today was state my case. I went over and made myself known."
