Editorial Page Editor Advertising Manager November 21, 1974 Insurance companies: Let students beware Carolina students contemplating buying a life insurance policy would do well to be wary of any agent using pressure tactics to get him to purchase life insurance.. Juniors and seniors should especially take note because they are contacted on the basis that they will be graduating soon and will be on their own without any "protection." It should be noted here we are not saying life insurance policies are bad; we simply feel the students should be aware that some life in surance policies, if you'll pardon the pun, don't live up' to their promises. Deferred payment plans are ones which are most often offered to students on the basis of "We know you can't afford the premiums now, so we'll let you have one year of coverage without the premiums and you can pay us back later." Students are asked to sign promissory notes which makes their financial obligation legal and would enable them to be taken to court if necessary to obtain the money should the policy be cancelled. - Of more concern is the promissory note which lets you borrow money without having to repay it at all. Several companies and agents have programs which allow you to borrow the money from your dividends or from sbme sort of cash value payment plan. Some of t1se plans are good ones, but others may not offer a student the option of repaying the loan in cash and Insist that he repay the amount borrowed out of his five-year or ten-year dividends. This reduces the overall value of the policy. Agents using "high pressure" tactics should not be listened to by students. Gary K. Stone, associate professor of Insurance at Michigan State University, gave an in-depth report on this which was printed in the June, 1973 issue of Journal of Risk and Insurance. "An absence of professionalism is characteristic of many agents who sell insurance on campus. The use of high pressure and fear tactics is the rule. The student is often given incomplete and irrelevant statistical information which prompts him to purchase a policy. The student is advised to buy now instead of later because: (1) The policy will not be available at a later date. (2) The policy will go up in r if Uete is a delay. (3). If the policy is allowed to lapse before note* repayment, the note becomes due and payable Immediately. Often there are additional charges made upon default, such as court costs and miscellaneous fees." The solution to the problem is offered in this article and perhaps this University should follow suit. Michigan State University does not allow agents to sell policies on campus. The University of North Carolina and Oregon State require all life Insurance agents to be registered with the university. Limitatio.n are placed on these agents and an agent may have his registration permit to sell insurance to students revoked if too many complaints are received about him. Many students feel helpless when approached by 'a smart agent and they have no one to turn to for advice on this. Complaints about agents maybe -filed with the South Carolina State Inaurance Commission, but this does not help the student who wants to buy a policy but does .not know who to go to receive "objective" ad.vice on th. policy. This University shouldtakeit upon itself to institute some sort of program that can gie students the sorely needed advice about life Insurance policies. It Is unreasonable to expect evrery student to take a course on life insurance, but at least' the agents could be registered and students could complain to the Univerilty about pressure tactics and bad deals. A professor who teaches a course on life insurance was asked If he would bMy a policy similar to the College Master program offered by one of the companies in this area noted for its solicitation of students. LETTERS Player deserves chance to lead TO THE EDITOR: There has been much speculation 'concerning Coach Mooney Player's attempt to capture the position of head coach at USC. Good and bad have both been stated about his capabilities. May I say I feel myself in a good position to state my thoughts concerning this situation. I hRve been chewed out a number of times by Coach Player, and a very few times received praise from him. I have listened to him scream at fellow teammates 'in hopes of making theni play their position a little more superbly. I have watched him bow and pray that the team who deserved it most would win. I have sed him lead the team in s ,nn gs. I have seen him admit mistakes, known things. he did were not always right. I have watched him suffer after a defeat. Many people think they know Coach Player. They have heard talk and they have seen what goes on upon the field on game day. But do they know what goes on behind the scene? There is a great deal more to football than just the game. Coaches with great talent spend a year or two on top, -but coaches who win every year win by knowing what to do with the talent available. It takes unity, coherence, spirit, and most of all, hard work.. Coach Player is an unusual man. He has the ability -to motivate and .instill pride In his players via bumps and bruises that may result from tough practice. He has the ability to make a player uan derstand what he must do te make the starting line up. The sacrifices a player makes to play on his team make the player give every ounce of strength to win on game day.
