Tennis loses
Carolina's top singles player,
Clyde Skaflestad, lost in the finals
of the Club 300 tennis tournament
in Gainesville, Fla. Sunday, but
not without putting up a major
struggle.
After splitting the first two sets
with the University of Alabama's
Sam Vuille, losing the first 4-6 and
winning the second 7-6, Skaflestad
fought off a triple-match point in
the 12th game of the final set and
forced a tie-breaker.
Carolina's top seed, a transfer
from junior college, went up 3-0 in
the decisive tie-breaker but Vuille
battled back to capture the match
with a 7-6 victory in the third set.
Skaflestead and Andreas Huf
schmid also fell victim to Vuille in
the doubles finals, losing to him
and his partner, Chip Wade, 6-4, 7
6.
Carolina's Steve Geller lost to
the eighth-seeded player in the
first round.

Coach Frank McGuire unveils
his 11th Carolina basketball squad

Scholarship intra-squad game in
Carolina Coliseum, played for the
benefit of the Thad E. "Ted"
Saleeby Memorial Scholarship

McGuire, who has won 452
games in 24 collegiate seasons and
185 in 10 years at Carolina, is
aiming for his seventh consecutive
season with more than 20 wins.
The Gamecocks have been ranked
among the top ten in most of the
pre-season national rankings and
have been rated as high as fourth.
Carolina lost only backcourt star
Brian Winters from last year's 22-5
team and the addition of 6-9 center
Tommy Boswell, a transfer from
South Carolina State, and two
at
men--Jack Gilloon and Billy Truitt
-is expected to give the Gamecocks
superior overall personnel.
The Gamecock co-captains, 6-8
forward Alex Efiglish and 6-2
guard Mike Dunleavy, both
juniors, head the list of veteran
returnees. Jimmy Walsh, a 5-11
guard, is the squad's only senior.
