Transcendental meditation is an
activity which claims to help a
t, ison develop orderly thinking
and atn expansion of 4wal-enesit.
Eric Parris, who is a . prac
titioner of transcendental
meditation, said it helps create an
organized mind. "Meditators
exhibit more orderly thinking," he
said.
Transcendental meditatipn,
which is commonly referred. to as
the Science of Creative In
telligence, lead to greater
creativity, Parris emphasized.
The release of tensions and
frustrations is a characteristic of
meditation, Parris said. "Whet a
person is well-rested, he is not as
irritable," he said, "and the person
becomes strong psychologically
and emotionally stable."
Meditation promises a good, fast
way to get a lot of rest in a hurry.

"People can't appreciate many
things," Parris said, "because
they are tired." Transcendental
meditation acts to give a person a
kind of deeper rest than they get in
sleep," he continued, "and it gives
a person a lot of energy."
Parris described the process one
follows to becom.e a meditator.
First, the person has to go to a
teacher. The teacher then chooses
a mantra for the person, which is a
vehicle to help the mind transcend.
The teacher then tells the studebt
how long he should meditate each
day. Usually a student will
meditate for 15 to 20 minutes once

When a person meditates, Parris
said, he constantly repeats his
mantra. '"Ihis is a very natural
process," he said, "and if any
effort is involved, the person is
meditating the wrong way."
Parris said while a person is
meditating, he is able to ex
perience more subtle thoughts.
Also, meditation calms down the
brain. When the brain is calm, the
body becomes clam also. The body
gains physical rest and the mind
gains a degree 6f rest also, he
explained.

with problems," Parris said.
People who meditate are better
able to understand problems,
because they are well-rested, he
said.
Parris said meditation causes
noticeable physical changes in a
person. "The meditator is a better
able to stay alert and attentive in
classes and when doing
homework," he said. "Meditation
helps a person do less and ac
complish more," he added.
Grades tend to go up when one
meditates, Parris said. "Because
people get more rest, they function
better and enjoy learning more,"

Bill Stackhouse, a former
