Rape victiml first concern, BY BETH PADGETT Of The Gamecock staff The mental stability and well being of a rape victim is the first major concern of Faith Nolan, Richland County rape psychologist. Speaking to a predominantly female audience at 'USC, Nolan said, "often much internal psyche damage is done to the woman, especially if the rape is not reported." Nolan, who works for the Richland County Sheriff's Department, handles a rape case from the moment it is reported. "Many times the victim is so confused she can't give a statement of what happened," Nolan said. "But usually the woman needs to get her feelings out," she added, "and the last person she wants to talk to is a man, even one in an uniform." It is Nolan's duty.to help prove the three elements necessary to get a conviction for rape: proof of BASIL Go..r POT Lunch Mon.-Fri. 12-2 Dinner 6-9:30 Mon-Set. Nolan said she trys to get as much physical evidence as possible, to help prove the rape. A doctor checks the victim for remains of semen, but the doctor isn't the one who treats the victim. Also, someone checks the victim for hair samples, pieces of the rapist's clothing and sometimes takes pictures of bruises or cuts on the woman's body, she said. "I also explain the options open to a woman when she is raped," Nolan said. If the woman is not taking contraceptives, there may be the need for the morning after pill to avoid pregnancy, she said. A woman may need penicillin to protect her against venereal diseases, she added. Nolan emphasized, "There is a need to destroy the myth that a woman wants to get raped, that she enjoys the 'cave-man approach' to sex."Attitudes about. rape are changing," she said, and it is a topic of concern for all of us-men and women.
