GAMECOCK "1 Isa mewspsper's duy toprit the news. aind raise 6h.". WIL3UR F.STOREY BILLRANT.E -r 9". OUTAW ART FRANK EMW aw Advts Maag October 31, 1974 Membership policies need further study Now that the chartering commission has closed the books on its "investigation" of the Association of Afro American students' membership policies, it might be an appropriate time to question the .basis on which the commission reached its decision. Apparently, all the "investigation" consisted of was the calling of the executive council of Afro before the. commission to explain their membership policies. The commission was told, quite predictably, that Afro was open to any University student, regardless of race. The commission, via its chairman, also a member of Afro, issued a statement saying, "on the basis of all information available to it there is no indication the Association is not operating within their approved Constitutional guidelines." It might be interesting to ask just how much more evidence the commission would need before they took some disciplinary action against Afro, and all the other campus organizations that practice the same type of ''open" membership. Not only was the president of the organization quoted as saying this "open" campus organization "wasn't ready" to accept people of other than African descent, but a notice to that effect was placed on the student activities bulletin board for all to see. This president after seeing his words in the cold light of print, later said he was only expressing a personal opinion. Yet this is T the elected leader of the organization, the person who shapes the policies, programs and direction the group t will take during the coming year. Yet' the commission did not take this into con- f sideration. It set up no panel to make sure Afro's con- P stitution is being upheld, nor did it require the ir organization to actively recruit members of other races.0 It did not recommend any such action, rather it took; the word of an organization that is still trying to explain tr what happened to $1,400 in expected revenu.es last year that.it was open to all students. . This newspaper is not calling for the revoking of " Afro's charter. There is a need on the USC campus for a e group that brings together all students, regardless of 2 race, with an interest in African culture. But any rr organization that is not "ready" to accept persons other e4 than of African abstraction, does not deserve the $11,700 r allocated to it by the Student Allocations Commission. .It is easy for any campus organization to state that it tl is open to all students, while at the same time make it n well know that it means just the opposite. If the com- th mission is going to sit back and blindly accept the word hi fromn campus organization that they are living up to ix their charters, it is only a matter of time before we have " all types of ethnic, political, and fraternal groups on 0o campus, all claiming to be open to all students while at JE the same time closed to all but a percentage of the g< student body. Perhaps it is time for the chartering th commission to be investigated. h a; WCG C< .0 sie ri 06 0 " 00 60 4 - a 0 0 0 &O Reprinted from the Oct. 21 N.C. State Technician.
