Many rapes unreported From Page One Department is concerned that the percentage of rapes reported in Columbia is extremely low, of ficials said 80 to 90 per cent are never reported. They became concerned that women had no one other than another man to talk to when reporting a rape. Sheriff Frank Powell and the County Council opened a position called Rape Psychologist. They wanted a woman with a background in psychology or a related field. Faith Nolan, who has a masters in counseling was hired, becoming the first rape counselor in South Carolina. Her official title, though one she rarely uses, is Deputy Sheriff Psychologist. When a woman reports a rape in Columbia, Ms. Nolan is called in from the very beginning. She is the only one to do the questioning. She works with the woman, takes her to the doctor, explains all the options open to her, goes through the judicial process with her and eventually provides follow up counseling. "I counsel not only with the victim in a rape crime but with the family," Nolan said. "It is not the victim alone who suffers. The family, the husband, the boyfriend all need to know what is involved, what can be done to help the 4 situation. The victim and family need support." Rape is a crime ofaggression,not a crime of passion. 71 per cent of all rapes are premeditated with 50 percent occuring inside the house. "One out of every four women will be raped or sexually assaulted in her lifetime," Nolan pointed out from FBI statistics. In promoting rape awareness Nolan asks women to think back to a situation in their lives to a potentially dangerous time. "I am sure every woman can think back to a situation whenlrape could have occurred. I can,' Nolan said. "Women have obligations to one another. They must have the courage to speak up because rapists are repeaters," she added. "Laws are getting better. People are becoming more educated and concerned. Rape myths are being thrown away and society is finally becoming knowledgeable," she said. Women between the ages of 15 and 29 are the most susceptible to rape. Nolan is coming to Carolina, Oct. 29 to speak since these are the main college ages. She wants to speak to all students, not just women. She feels men should be aware of women's problems and not just laugh off rape. "Rape is not funny. People must become empathetic and realize that it is a crisis when a woman Is raped," Nolan said.
