22 deals, not only preventing their
happiness, but men's happiness. I
feel able to move within the
movement and want to stimulate
students to think about the
meaning of womanhood both as a
construct of culture and as an
emotional, psychological,
existential experience," Lewis
explained.
While Lewis deals with religious
aspects, Dr. Beverly Heisner of the
Art Department, discusses women
in art and Karen Rood, a graduate
student in English, traces women
in western literature.
The course began looking at
attitudes of and about women in
the Bible and from there to such
works as Sophocles "Antigone" to
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley to
the contemporary novel by Alix
Kates Shulman, Memoirs of an Ex
Prom Queen. Guest speakers have
appeared in conjunction with some
of these readings. Ann Brailsford
came from the theatre department
to lead a discussiodt on "Antigone"
and the attitude of women in Green
drama. Professor Paula Feldman,
an expert in the English Depart
ment on Mary Shelley, will be
discussing Frankenstein.
The class is not just lectures but
mainly free form discussions.

Then there is the matter of
missing funds. Last spring the
Afro American Association was
supposed to earn $1,400. Simoneau
said the money was expected in
dues to the organization and from
revenue collected during Black

Students are required to identify
and explore areas of interest in the
form of projects. The class
meetings are overviews to point
things out and encourage interests.
Next semester University 112
will appear. It will focus around
the history, economics and
sociology of women in the 20th
century. Professor Maloney of
History, Dr. Andres of General
Studies and Kathy Fritz of
Sociology will be team teaching. It
will have the same basic format as
111 with some variations.,
Many University departments
are offering their own courses in
women's studies. A student can
have a cognate in this area. Under
General Studies, a student can
major in women's studies. Armeda
Gilbert is the first and presently
only student to be majoring in
womens studies at Carolina
"We're only just beginning with
women's studies at Carolina. The
consciousness is low. We'll
generate more interest and
demand as time goes on," Maloney
said. "Women are working up.
Women's studies will break the
artificial separation between
theory and practice, learning and
being."

Simoneau reported, he has not

has Robert E. Alexander, dean for
Student Activities. Alexander said
this matter should be brought to
the students' attention.
He refused further comment at
this stage. "I do have some per

"but I'd rather hear from the
students first."
