Witten's many wit From Page One the committee to decidc." H4rold Brunton, vice president of operations, was "regretful, but not surprised" when he first learned of the Witten resignation. "Dean Witten had a rough twelve years. When he first came to USC and took over Student Affairs, he was faced with integration," Brunton said. "Then there was the wide change in regard to student Ideas, and the riots of 1970. Dean Witten also helped to change resident life from 'just a bed' to the institution of many recreational facilities available to students living on campus. "When Chuck resigned, I was not tatally surprised," Brunton added. "That job is exhausting and holds alot of pressures. No matter what decisions he made, there was always someone unhappy with the end result" "For two years now, Chuck has thought about stepping down. He always loved teaching and waited to return to it. When things would get rough, he would always in dicate that he wanted to resign," Brunton said. When asked what type of person he preferred to see replace Witten, Brunton replied, "Dr. Patterson put his finger on it when hesaid it is a job for a younger man, about 35 45 years old. He must be physically, as well as mentally fit. Chuck did have these characteristics, but the exhaustion wore him out." Frank Siano, University Union Free univer, BY LEE POWELL Of the Gamecock Staff A new-style learning center is coming to the South, and it is coming to Columbia. It is a free university for anyone interested in meditation and all aspects of it and will be headed by Ken Friedman, a former USC history professor. The university will be open to all people desiring to learn meditation or to probe deeper into it. Besides meditation, the school will offer some more traditional courses-workshops, seminars, al Wh4 * Clip this coup between the houri *youtooneFREE r when you buy a Hi Offer expires| Coupon good ( * E 0 0 resignatio h mixed t HAROLD BRUNTON ...not surprised president, said he "was sorry to hear about it (the resignation). Dean Witten was the most straightforward person I ever worked with. I liked him very much. He had great ideas and got a lot of respect from everyone. I like dealing with that kind of person. "Although Dean Witten was pretty well set in his way and ideas, he was always there to give you advice, Siano continued. "If you wanted something, you had to tell him why and then justify it. He helped get many things for the student body, especially the beer in the Golden Spur." Siano feels Witten's successor should be "straight forward and responsive to the students. He reports that he has been looking forward to starting such a school ever since he was in Boulder, Colo., and visited Naropa, the university after which Friedman's school will be styled. There will be regular on-going classes, Friedman said. "What we lost in Dean Witten resigning from Student Affairs will be gained in the classroom. I hope that he will not only teach on the graduate level, but also on the undergiaduate level," Siano ad ded. Acting Provost Keith Davis said he was also surprised by the resignation. "He was a capable person and I was pleased with his work. He put in 12 years at a tough job. Patterson has given Davis the job of selecting the search com mittee to chose Witten's successor. "As of yet, the committee to select Dean Witten's successor hasn't been set up,"Davis said. "We will wait at least a month before the committee goes into action. It will probably consist of two SGA members, one from the Student Union, 2 or 3 faculty members, and possibly someone from the Student Affairs staff. I think the committee will be slightly larger than President Patterson had anticipated, but I will not chair it." Allen Lawhead, SGA vice president, echoed Leventis' opinion in expressing suprise at the announcement. "Dean Witten helped SGA a lot, especially proposed bills before they reached President Patterson. He would also advise the smaller committees and help them with their proposals," Lawhead said. Pt Columbia traditional, it would not be so -different as to confuse anyone. The university would have three basic facets, he said. They are: meditation; Tai-Chi, which is a non-verbal sensory awareness conception and skillful action to take insight from what a student learns and how to study it. Benjamin Dunlap, a USC English professor is helping Friedman and said he is very excited about the affair. Friedman's basic concern right now is, he said, to get the university off the ground.
