G. Bell Camp THE UNI\ Carolina meets Virginia Tech Saturday night in what should prove to be the Gamecocks' first victory of the football season. Both the Gamecocks and the Gobblers have 0-4 records, but USC nearly engineered an upset of powerful Houston last weekend while Tech has hardly threatened much weaker opponents. The game, Carolina's homecoming, will start at 7:30. USC's winless slate this season appears much easier to explain than Tech's-Carolina has played four relatively strong teams in Georgia Tech, Duke, Georgia and Houston. But Tech's slate is much weaker, with Kentucky, SMU, Houston and VMI.handing the Gobblers their losses. Steve Parker ,ERNE.@= Sports Editor USC's baseball team played a seemingly insignificant series of games these past few days with a semi-pro outfit from Columbia--the Columbia Jets- but those games serve as somewhat of an indication of the powerhouse that Bobby Richardson has built at USC. In a time of year, as one fan said last Thursday night at the first game of the series, when only four teams should be playing baseball (that being the four con tenders for Major League World Series play) Carolina was dominating baseball games, just as they do during the regular season. Only one of the games with the Jets was really close, that being the first encounter when the two teams battled through the first seven innings with a 1-1 deadlock, but USC sprinted to a win in that game, 5-1. USC took the next game quite easily, 9-3, and the third game was even easier, 13-3. But this is not to say the Jets are a weak team or that the Gamecocks had an easy go of it. Such is not the case -the Jets are a strong unit, comprised of predominately ex-Carolina players, most from these past successful seasons. And since baseball players continue to get better through their 20's, the mere fact that the Jets are mostly ex-USC'ers does not mean the team is over-the-hill. Instead, they should be approaching the maturity of their baseball careers-if they continue playing baseball and most of the Jets play in summer leagues. And the Jets represent the class, quite probably, of the Central Carolina League, in which they play. The squad has run up a 36-9 record in two years of league play and has been in the title game both times, losing once and winning once. So Carolina's victories over the old Gamecock veterans are quite impressive. If USC can win so easily Contiited on Page 13 KEEP YOUR BODY WARM And what better way than a casual comfortable sweater from Pants Pavilion?
