"Generally, it (the reduction) will reduce a quarter from a $5 or $6 ticket," Robert Horning, director of the Carolina Coliseum, said last week. The controversial tax, which was at 10 per cent,was reduced to 7 per cent of the gross reciepts by the South Carolina State Legislature last July. In the past, a show which grossed $25,000 would be charged a total of $2,500 or 10 'er cent in admission taxes, Horning said. Now, the same show would only be charged $1,605 or seven per cent in admission taxes. Further reductions are planned for the near future, Horning added. In a Oct. 14 letter to members of the Gamecock Club, USC's athletic booster club, Dietzel said the Title IX requirements "could easily bankrupt every athletic department in the coun try." There was some argument, however, by Mike Grier, University counsel and others on the point that because the department received benefits from a federally funded body the case proposed by Hagan would not hold water in court. Grier said his interpretation of Title IX was that the regulations called for compatable and reasonable funding ofV women's sports with men's and not equal support. Representatives of Women's Equality Groups and NOW present as guests at the meeting expressed their concerns that scholarships were the main area of inequality between the men's and women's athletic programs. They said that while men athletics received educational support from playing sports no such support was available to women. John C. West said at an open press conference in the Law Center Tuesday. West said the state showed a net surplus of *90 million as of June 30. If an event is along charitable, scientific, educational, or regious lines, sponsors may apply to the South Carolina License Tax Divison for exemption, J.W. Lawson, director of the division, said. One of the problems areas, in the vast. was te attraction of "superstars." The Coliseum should be-. able to attract more top-quality preformers with the reduction of the tax, Horning said. "The reduction of the tax has helped our business," he said, "The legislature was constructive in its decision." "It was a fair and equitable decision on the part of the Legislature," Horning added. Horning admits the reduction will not change things im mediately.
