Nostalgia is currently the hottest thing going and with that in mind the 1974 Homecoming Committee, chaired by Minnie Dobbins, is announced the plans for "The way we Were," Homecoming 1974. This year's festivities include: a major concert, featuring Chubby Checker, The Drifters, The Crystals, and Johnny Thunder at the Carolina Coliseum; the rebirth of the Carolina Homecoming Parade which will be bigger and better than ever: The following is a calendar of deadlines and events for"The Way We Were." Vending machines Yearly U BY LEE POWELL Gamecock Staff Writer The perennial problem of patrons is once again upon us - screwy vending machines. Lurking all over campus, they await our collection of coins to gobble up and then not deliver anything except the click of a button, the sound of change falling, or the humming of a motor for a short time. Whether or not a buyer will receive his purchase from these machines is precarious. However, the general trend is that he will. The number of malfunctioning machines on campus this semester has lessened considerably since last semester, officials said lastl week. Bill Carter, manager of University Vending Operations, partially attributes the decrease to the university's switching of vending companies from last year. The new machines work better than the replaced ones, and the companies themselves attest to the fact. The Coca-Cola Co. has in stalled about a dozen more machines on campus since last year. Midland Vendors, who supply candy and snack machines, have placed several new units around campus. Generally, about $1,500-2,000 a day will go through these machines during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer, of course, this figure is substantially lower. Vandalism has decreased this year from last year, with only one reported incident so far this semester. One reason for the decrease is the fact that dor mitories now have to pay for all damages to their machines. The money will come out of the dormitories' profits off these machines. If problems result, it probably will not be from vandalism, Carter says "95 per cent of the problem is in the coin mechanism." He went on to say people either try to throw the money down the slot or the mechanism is sightly bent. The Coca-Cola Co. reports malfunctioning of machines has' not increased at all over the last year. When there is a problem, it usually only takes an hour or two for a repairman to come out and fix it. A spokesman for Midland Vendors reported little change in the amount of broken machines. Machines that have to be repaired are usually fixed the first time. EET...
