In a letter read by Richard Johnson, Youth Director for Ravenel, to a student gathin in Capstone, Charles D. "ug " Ravenel promised to bring "a fresh new approach to the government of South Carolina." Addressing the meeting of about a hundred prospective Ravenel workers last Thursday evening, ,Johnson said Ravenel "is the best incentive the youth has ever had in South Carolina." Johnson said young people had "played the most important role" in Ravenel's victory in the primaries last summer. Ravenel is the Democratic gubernatioial nominee. He will face Republican can didate Jim Edwards in the Nov. 12 election. According to Robert Alexander, dean for student ac tivities, no student group promoting' Edwards' candidacy has been organized as yet. Johnson warned against the complacent feeling in some ar ticles that "we have the election in the bag. We can't take anything for granted. Johnson said they would attempt to reach every student enrolled in the university. After Oct. 5, the deadline for the voter registration, the group would try to "make 'Pug' as visible as possible." Johnson said they were not going to use any billboards because he felt they had more to say about Ravenel than could be said on any billboard. The group would also try to raise funds -througb~ pancake suppers and car washes, Johnson said. He told - the audience Ravenel still owed $175,000 and said most of this would have to be raised. Johnson then invited the student gathering to a chicken barbecue in Greenwood, S.C. Can Brian Dorn, a loser in his bid for the Democratic nomination, is hosting the picnic in favor of Ravenel, Friday, Sept. 13. Let us give you the that should go wit] Whether you're still in medical school with th rigors of three to five years of graduate medical edL cation still to be faced, or are already a practicin physician, it's our opinion that the Air Force cai offer both professional and personal satisfactioi hard to duplicate in civilian life. An overstatement? Not if you consider th specifics. .Take the problem of graduate medical educa tion. It's a period of your life the Air Force can mak considerably easier with comfortable salary and lie ing conditions. Creature comforts aside, the Air Force offer professional advantages. Besides receiving trainini an your own specialty, you'd be in contact witi physicians in all of the medical specialties. You'I function in an environment which is intellectuall, stimulating and professionally challenging. Not all physicians pursue post residency fellowa ships. But if you are interested, the Air Force con ducts them both in-house and at civilian institutions The physician already in practice can look foi ward to other things. If you want training in the practice of the medicine of the future, you'll findi an the Air Force. For example, there's emphasis oi group medicine and preventive medicine, and th< growing specialty of "family physician" Whateve your interest, there are few specialties which are no being practiced in today's Air Force. The physician starting his practice in civiliar life has to take into account the cost of setting up ai office. Supplies and equipment readily available. g He has many options available to him when treating ra patients. For example, he can consult with Air Force ra specialists. He also has referral to other Air Force facilities via aeromedicsl evacuation. Last, but not e least, are the satisfactions that come with having the opportunity for regular follow-ups, and a missed -appointment rate that is practically nil. e Whether you are already a physician, or soon to -become one, you might find it extremely interesting to find out what the Air F'orce has to offer.
