Mountain 1 Offers Quie By Merry Bateman Gamecock Staff Wrie On weekends I seek out. people and experiences. Last week I escaped the college routine of running from class to class, fighting people, following schedules and seeing 'nothing but pavement and buildings, and went to the mountains of North Carolina. A friend recommended I stay at Mountain Manor Inn which is open to college students and groups on weekends and which has reasonable student rates. It is located in Saluda, North Carolina between Hendersonville and Tryon. The Inn, a mansion built in 1901, is nestled among trees off Ja Nich (HIGI II ? They immediately drew me into the warmth of the old inn and made me feel at home. Mountain Manor Inn has a homey, old timey atmosphere and decor. Linda and Perry are not or dinary keepers. They want to personally know their guests. The Inn is first their home and secondly a hotel. The business is not foremost. They said the Inn is a good place to live. It is quiet and peaceful- a perfect place to study, read and write. The town of Saluda, which is within hiking distance, has a population of only 550. "The more important matters for the mind are states of con sciousness, of being concerned with the unity of one and the way human beings and other beings relate in nature," Perry said. Linda and Perry prepare all the meals for the Inn. Natural food menus are a first concern and being healthy is essential to them. There is a lot to do at the Inn. On certain weekends, workshops are held for astology, sensitivity, photography and dance sessions. A piano and guitar can be played anytime. Nature becomes a commodity and can be taken for granted by people who cannot understand that it is a part of the festival of life. There can be no monetary value placed on natural things that are free. Mountain Manor Inn offers the tranquility and inner peace of the natural world. It is a good place to wander for a short visit or settle in themountain setting for an unlimited time. With the inflationary prices in travel these days, this is not such a bad deal.
