Mary and Tom Jones - * Tom and Mary Jones Continued from Page 3 for the University, she reflects the same in their family. We walked back to the house so she could show me some of the gifts they had received. The faculty had given them a silver pitcher and "mint julep" glasses. Other friends had given them a silver tray. But the one Mary Jones treasures most is a silver tray from the students of Carolina Cares. The inscription was "to Tom and Mary." This is the way they want to be remembered. Not as figureheads and people out of touch with reality, but as Tom and Mary Jones. They are entering a- new period in their lives. Their home has been renamed "the home of the turtle." At the last commencement exercise, Mrs. Jones explained, there had been a speaker who summed up their future. "Dare to be like the turtle. For he never gets anywhere until he sticks his neck out." she said. But Jones said that Foard's statements were the largest single factor in causing campus unrest. Then, the pressure to resign came from within the University as well. Dr. Julio Bortolazzo, former director of the State's technical education system, and federal judge Sol Blatt, Jr., both Board, members, also called for Jones resignation. By the middle of his twelfth year, Jones had weathered political, academic, administrative and social confrontations. He had fought a two year medical school in 1962 and he endorsed a four-year one in 1971. He had presided over a school which received less money per student then any other state supported college in South Carolina in 1962. In 1974 he said, USC is funded comparably with other state-supported universities in the nation. In 1962 he dealt with the problem of an underpaid and understaffed faculty. In 1974, the USC faculty numbers 1,200 with more than 600 members holding Ph.D's. ys lBy PIn - Wale OLORS LOW-RISE JEANS *Blue Denim or * Brushea Denim LEVY'S FOR MOST ANYThING AND HES BREW 3!i A11MUAsaLy IL. Jones has been responsible for such educational innovations as the "model school's" program and 'Contemporary University. Departments, curricula, graduate studies and research programs have all been developed and ex panded immensely since 1962 under Jones' administration. He has headed a University which has had to "not only operate a big and on-going institution, but virtually build a sizeable new one." For example, in February 1969 Jones said, "The University has a i0-year program involving some $70 million in plant construction." In July 1962 President Jones greeted 8,000 students on six canpuses; in July 1974 he said good-bye to 27,000 students on nine campuses. His resignation, announced January 27, has been a quiet affair, with no formal ceremony to of ficially end his presidency. He will teach at the Massachusetts In stitute of Technology (MIT) for one year, after which he will return to USC as an educator, not an ad ministrator. Tom and Mary Jones will again load up their car, but this time there will be some changes. They will drive the Cadillac they bought from the State in 1969 and make the trip up North unaccompanied by children or animals. And they will say "see you soon" to their new home on Lake Katherine. "The big house" was emptied of 12 years of USC and 32 years of family memorabilia recent ly. Mary Jones said they leave the University freed from "prison" on the Horseshoe, freed from 24-hour days of on-call duty, and freed from the stifling of their personal lives. Tom Jones added, "I am resonably pleased with what I have been able to do as president of the University." But he also said, "I have a lot of things yet to be done." lrMt p Especially this mids sale.
