Gordon Lig by Chuck Cromer . It is a refreshing feeling to know in these days of hard-rock and glitter there is still "room at the top" for the soft, acoustical melodies of the folk musician. And Gamecock perhaps foremost of these is Gordon Lightfoot. Lightfoot is no newcomer to the music world. He has been writing and playing for over ten years. M Yes, if you remember, back in the l l mid-sixties, when folk music was king. Lightfoot's musical style has changed little since those early days. He continues to write R eview romantic love ballads and songs uniquely humanistic and subtly philosophic. His lyrics and vocals are unmistakeable because they are almost always his own. Until now, most people remembered this Canadian for his classic album, "Sit Down Young Stranger." Since its release in 1970 two singles, "Approaching Lavender" and "If You Could "Dad! However, since 1970, Lightfoot': popularity has declined. His nexi album release, "Summer Side o: Life," met with only moderate success. Two albums tha followed, "Don Quixote" and "Oh Dan's Records," were fine musica accomplishments, but not greal money-makers. It is only with his latest album "Sundown" that Lightfoot ha: achieved the superstar status hE once had. The overall concept of the albun is of escapism from the confines o our society. Wandering througi the songs is an individual wan dering, daydreaming, and running away from his social prison. This theme is brilliantly an< beautifully layed-on us in "Suite". The song deals with a trouble< individual who is going over thi thoughts in his mind while walkini along the shore of a bay on ai August day. There are five basic steps on( must take to qualify for residen1 status, but before you go and further, you must bear in minc that the most importan1 qualification is to show a visable source of income, and to be free of any parental support in terms of finances. The islands appear to be extending an in vitation to him to come over and try a new life on their shores. This, the wish, or instinct, to escape t from the "rat race" of society is I unmistakeable. t Another example of this magnetic theme is the tune, "Carefree Highway". The character in this number wishes to escape from the realization that his once happy marriage is no more. Lightfoot then pictures this man as slipping away on the traditional "carefree highway" in order to escape his depression. An offshoot of this escapism theme is Lightfoot's concern with I our government's and our society's preoccupation with I "watchdogging" our individual a lives. The song "Watchman's Gone" is a musical representation i of Orwell's 1984. However, Lightfoot's traditional optimism is s present. ings Possible ig Resident St apartment , private home, or rooming house will do. Be sure to save all rent receiptsfor it will bi I required to present these as prooi t in your residency application. The second step you must take is to get a job, and at the appropriate t time, file a South Carolina tax return. It does not matter if the job - is full or part-time, all you need to ! show is a source of income. A xerox copy of your tax return l and a statement from your em ployer is needed for your ap plication. Step number three is to acquire a South Carolina driver's license, and if you have a car, to register the automobile in this state. All applications regarding this process can be found at the State Highway Department. The drivers license is necessary to show your intent to live and work in South Carolina after graduation. A statement to that effect is slso required on the residency ap plication. Next, you should register to vote. Usually this requires at least a six (# /0:30. The song ends happily with two 'breaking-away from the wat chman's restrictions and setting out to develop a new life. Another social comment is made in the song, "Is There, Anyone Home". The character in this song comes to a strange house looking for protection from a man who is chasing him with a gun. But, I'll let 'you hear the outcome. All in all, "Sundown" is one of Lightfoot's finest albums. I now suggest a way to really enjoy it. Listen closely to the lyrics by yourself. Thep ohtan your' favorite bottle of wine, your favorite partner, and lie back with the music at medium volume. This must be ac companied by a copy of your parents tax return as proof of the emancipation statement. The emancipation form, and all others, can bew acquired at the Admissions office on Gregg Street.
