Jasebali The team is led in hitting by John Gambrell who has a school record 54 hits and a .391 batting average. Hank Small has four school records and is currently tied for a record with 11 homers. Small has a .333 batting average and has school records with 40 runs scored and 40 RBI. Bass was voted the team's "MVP" at the Spring Sports Banquet recently. He is an ex ceptional hitter with a .305 average. Jeff Grantz and Eddie Ford are hitting at a . 285 and .252 averages respectively. Jim Pankovits and Drew Choate are the other two regulars on the team. Choate, an outstanding catcher, and Pankovits, a promising freshman, have .250 and .238 averages. Jeff Grantz passed up spring; football drills to play baseball. Richardson has said Grantz was one of the keys to this years suc cess story. Grantz, who plays strong defense has a school record of 26 stolen bases. "I didn't think we would be a ranked ninth in the country now ' before the season began," said Grantz. "I did expect us to get a bid r because I watched Georgia I Southern last year and they didn't impress me as being better than Carolina." 1 "I think we have been successful 7 because we play as a team," said I Grantz. "Baseball is a sport that I you can play as individuals, but it won't help you win." Eight games remain on the schedule. Bids go out May 15. Bobby Richardson has coached Carolina to a national ranking. To date his career record stands 121 61-1. His rookie season in 1970 was his only losing season. His recruiting ability has become obvious this season. Observers think the Gamecocks could have five players selected in June's pro baseball draft. "I could have stayed in the Yankee organization when I retired," said Richardson, "but I wanted to come home and coach. I love my job at South Carolina." Virtually every Carolina of fensive record has either already been broken or will be broken by the season's end. As a team the Gamecocks have hit 45 homers surpassing the old mark of 26.
