SAC Editorial: Smith Responds To The Editor: Since the Gamecock's editorial regarding the Student Allocations Commission was begun with my name, I would appreciate an op portunity to respond. First, regarding my resignation as Chairman, the other members of the SAC are aware of my reasons as a full explanation was given at the time. That the Gamecock should have to speculate regarding them is a result of the Editor's decision not to send a reporter despite appeals from myself and others that the student body be told how their money is being distributed. Many may be surprised to learn that the SAC has met almost weekly during this academic year and has spent over 55 hours on Spring Hearings alone and is far from the end. Secondly, the editorial charged that budget hearings are similar to the Spanish Inquisition and that the Commission is ignorant of the needs of organizations other than Student Government and the University Union. To the extent that individuals are intimidated by budget hearings, I personally apologize, but the hearings are a sincere attempt to learn the financial needs of the various student organizations. Ad ditionally, I, like the majority of SAC members, am not a member of either the Union or SGA. Thirdly, regarding the suggested restructuring of the SAC, I have tried for the past nine months to think of a way to improve the structure, and I have failed. The University Union does appoint three members and the proposition has been put forth before to reduce that number, 'but my .experience has been that the Union appointees are the most knowledgeable, in volved, and dedicated members of the Commission and that their absence would cause .serious harm rather' than benefit. If there are any other suggestions, I would b4 happy to hear them. Last, I would like to state m3 views regarding the SAC. Thiu year total budget requests are ove1 $113,000 more than the tota available funds. Between now an< final exams, the Commission mus bring the budget requests in lini with the amount of available funds For this job the Commissior members do not receive stipends or basketball tickets, or, mos )ur Mail ften, even thanks. I know of no >ther organization facing such a lifficult task, and I know of no other >rganization which takes its responsibility with as much seriousness or which tries as hard to reach fair and just decisions as the Student Allocations Com mission. The Chicago Times. 1861 Faith Unduly Attacked To the Editor: This letter is written as a response to Mr. Charles Robert's letter of April 1. I am a Christian and I feel that my faith has been unduly and rather childlessly attacked and ridiculed. For you see, Mr. Roberts not only tried to debate Miss Doe's letter, but used her as an excuse to flare out at Christianity (something which few people know much of.). If you are expecting me, Mr. Roberts, to retaliate with the same cuts and insults with which you lambasted my faith, then I'm afraid you must be disappointed. I don't mean to say your style is unimpressive, but I just do not get excited out of cutting people. I used to, but that's changed. Neither will I try to make an elaborate defense of my faith. The reason was I couldn't find any charges that warranted a reply. SAlso I couldn't understand some of them. rReally, all I wanted to say was that I feel sorry for you, Mr. SRoberts, and all those like you. rWhen I first read your letter I tried Sto get mad at you, and I did for Sawhile.
