Mets- Yankees USC Plans Announced Needs Athletic Fun Wrestle BILLY BAKER Sports Writer Carolina wrestling coach Tommy Cox has a growing, young wrestling program. But there are no national championships, packed .arenas or blue chip wrestlers in terested in coming to Carolina, simply because the program is still in the club stage, funded out of student activities fes with no scholarships-. The big issue is; Why isn't wrestling funded by the athletic department? The womens athletic program is now under the athletic department and many people think the wrestling program and other minor sports should get some of the money too. "But we must stick together as a club. "As far as women's athletics, I am glad to see they have a chamce because I think they deserve a chance to participate in athletics," said Cox. "I think after their basic needs are funded then minor sports will begin getting funds too." Last year's club operated with $2,000, according to Cox, and at a recent SAC budget meeting Cox was confident his $4,000 request for next year would win approval . The team already has a good mat and its own practice room. To a great degree their needs have been met. As far as the eream's level of competition in the past, Cox said, "Most colleges our size do have wrestling teams sponsored by the athletic department and they participate on a intercollegiate basis. There are not many colleges that have wrestling clubs. Those that. do are usually made up of former Olympic champions or high caliber-type athletes. "We wouldn't stand a chance against any school our size that was funded by the athletic department," said Cox, "The only club we wrestled this year is Clemson. We had a hard time getting funds for this past year's team. I went to the SAC committee and finally to the Student Senate and we got funds just in time."
