Cold Shooting Furn BY STEVE PARKER Sports Editor Philadelphia --Furman took advantage of an extremely cold Carolina shooting spell for a nine minute stretch in the second half to overcome the Gamecocks 76-67 Saturday night at the Palestra before a crowd of 1,042. The cold spell put an end to Carolina's season after just one game in the NCAA playoffs, while Furman continues on to play .9 E Goin T1 Headqu Corne * S Stops Gamec ian U Pittsburgh in the Easteri Regionals. They were going in and coming a back out again. f "All the shots we took were good e shots," Dunleavy continued, "But i they wouldn't go in and they (Furman) brought them back o down and put them in. It wasn't our defense that hurt us, it was our offense. If we had had a better shooting night I think we could have beat them." Senior Brian Winters, who scored 22 points in his last collegiate game to finish the season with an average of exactly 20.0, said, "You have to give Furman credit. We missed our shots, but they were playing pretty good defense and we didn't get the second shots off the boards. "We've run into cold spells like this before, but what can I say? I am sorry that it happened. Tonight they beat us, maybe on another night we'd have won, but that's not the thing--we were playing tonight," Winters said. "I wish we had had this kind of day against Creighton instead of tonight," McGuire said, referring to the Gamecock victory last week in which Carolina shot 57 per cent from the floor to take a 78-69 win at Creighton. The Gamecocks shot only 38 per cent from the floor against Furman, and just 31 per cent in the second half. No Gamecock made over half of his shot attempts. Craig Lynch sank a pair of free throws to give Furman the lead 60 59, and BruceGrimm followed with a pair of jumpers to move Furman up by five before Winters coun tered with a jumper. "And their little ;uys had good outside shots. If hey play like they did tonight they mave a very good chance of beating Nhoever they play next (Pitt ;burgh)." "(Clyde) Mayes was very tough inderneath, blocking shots and :oing everything. They're liable to be playing State if they play like they did tonight," McGuire said. Mayes sank nine of 13 shots in scoring 21 points to lead the Paladins. He also led everyone with 16 rebounds, five blocked shots and three steals. Grimm finished with 19 points, Lynch had 14, Fessor Leonard scored 11 and Ed Kelley had 10. Freshman Nate Davis followed Winters' 22 for Carolina with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Dunleavy had 12 and English 11 points. "I told the boys, 'You had a great year, keep your chins up'," McGuire said, following the close of his team's 22-5 season. PBNDE; TUESI 5 P.M.
