Schape: Makes ] BY JIM IIERSII Sports News Editor Carolina's Jim Schaper placed third in the 1,000-yard run in the AAU Invitational Indoor Track Championship Meet Friday night in New York. The third place finish enabled Schaper to make the U.S. indoor track team which will compete against a Russian team Saturday in Moscow. Rick Wolhuter, world record holder in the 880-yard run, won the 1,000-yard run in a time of 2:06.8. Byron Dyce, a Jamaican, was second in 2:07.4 and Schaper's third-placetime was 2:07.7. "We feel like Jim's making the U.S. team that will compete in Russia is not only a great in dividual honor, but it's also an honor for the school," Carolina track coach Bill McClure said Sunday. Schaper qualified for the finals of the AAU 1,000-yard run by winning his preliminary heat Friday morning. He was the only collegian to make the finals and beat three other top runners--Juris Luzins, Tom Bach and Brian McElroy--in the six-man finals. "He came within one second of first place, and that's not very much distance at the end of 1,000 yards," McClure said. "He's young and these guys have been around for awhile longer. Mcdlure said the high AAU finish should make Schaper one of the favorites in the 880-yard run at the NCAA indoor championships in Detroit March 8-9. In addition to running the 880, Schaper will also be part of the USC two-mile relay team with Rebus Sheley and Don and John Brown at the NCAA meet. The Russian trip will not in terfere with Schaper's preparation for the NCAA's, McClure said. He said Schaper will return to Columbia the day after the Russian meet and will be able to spend a normal training week a before the NCAA meet. "We made the decision together that he would not go if it would have kept him from running in Detroit," McClure said. Winthrop stopped Coker 64-44 for third place in the tournament, which was held on the Winthrop campus. Carolina and Winthrop now are eligible to play in the AIAW regionals to be held March 8 at Madison, Va. Wrestling USC's wrestling team suffered a 22-21 defeat to Southern Tech al Tech Saturday afternoon in the season's final regular seasor match. The loss lowered the wrestlers season record to 2-8-1. There will be a wrestling match between the USC wrestling club and a team of faculty members Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the P. E. Center. Trailing 32-25 at the half, Duquesne made it a close game by playing a tight man-to-man defense in the second half and pulled to within one point, 51-50 with seven minutes left in the game. But the outside shooting of Dunleavy and Winters saved Carolina. Carolina made 26 of 50 field goal attempts and 15 of 19 foul shots. "We went with the zone defense all the way because of Duquesne's Lionel Billingy," USC's Frank McGuire said. "If we had gone to a man-to-man it would have been like guarding John Shumate in the Notre Dame game. You can't second guess winning and the zone defense won it for us. "You would have to play here to realize this was a great win," McGuire added. "We should get the NCAA bid and that's what winning meant for us." McGuire said. "The challenge was for the kids. They did a great job." John Manning, Duquesne's coach, said, "I would have liked Carolina to come out of their zone because Billingy works well against a man-to-man. They don't beat themselves and they have two fine guards." Manning also said Billingy played with two sprained~ ankles. But the senior All-America can didate still managed 18 points. Winters led all scorers with 22 points and Dunleavy had 20 for Carolina. Alexander English had his lowest point total of his college career with four points.
