The reason nounced a deficit for last years for the increase is the rising cost of operations of approximately utilities and an increase in the pay $471,000. The increase breaks down some thing like this: All tene ment area will be increased from $170 to $180 Maxcy and Preston will be in creased from $180 to $195, Mc Bryde Quadrangle will go fron $185 to $195 and all dorms in thi Towers Area will go from $190 t< $205. Bates House will increase fron $510 to $560 (including the cost o the food plan), Bates-West will g< from $245 to $270, McClintock wil increase from $192.50 to $200, Sim; will increase from $197.50 to $210 Wade Hampton goes from $207.5( to $225, South Bldg. and Soutf Tower will be increased from $211 to $235, Capstone suites will in, crease from $220 to $245 and private baths will increase from $230 to $255 and Columbia Hall will increase from $230 to $255. This total will bring in about $260,000 for next year, which still leaves a deficit of about $211,000. This remaining deficit will be made up by the reduction of the maintenance staff, according to housing officials. The increase in room cost per semester may well be warranted, but the administrative services offered to students could use some improvements. The $10 room change fee is unnecessary and self. defeating in its purpose. It en courages illegal room switching as it is primarily used to discourage students from changing rooms, but the result is usually one of students switching rooms without telling the housing office. The housing office maintains that room switching costs them roughly $3,000 per year and the $10 is to help pay for administrative costs involved in room switching. They list about six or seven places that must be contacted per room switch including the use of a computer update service. It is still hard to conceive of this cost amountin to $10 per person. a~Our sMA US is Calat 'hone 796-1645; 3200 Two No ai St. (next to Carol ght Leg * >z. This would give the student a fair opportunity to relocate if he deems it necessary while discouraging constant change on the part of the student at the mere drop of a hat. The housing oftice has received much criticism for their refusal to refund money to people desiring to be released from their contract commitment of one year. Housing is justified in its policy on this matter. Special cases may be appealed to the housing office and students are given the opportunity to move if they have a valid reason for doing so. Students making commitments for one year should realize they are taking up space that could be used by someone else who, if he cannot get in must either find another place to live or go home. Housing, like any othet business, has a budget to meet and must make the necessary provisions to keep themselves out of debt and this results in the one year contract commitment on the part of the student. afood the finest. ash style tch Road, Phone 782-8806 ina Theatre) K 'estern Shirts mbroided and Plain ter Body Shirts All Colors and Designs I NEW Sport Shirte w Designs and Cuts ir Satin Embroided J ackets Only S24.95 r Shoes
