Sports In Brief BY HAROLD REAMES Sports Writer Track Carolina's track team traveled to Montgomery, Ala., Friday and won an impressive total of five first places in the United States Track and Field Federation Invitational and Open meet. The two-mile relay team won its event with a time of 7:42.1 and the mile relay team finished fourth with a school record of 3:20.6. Jim Schaper won the 1000-yard run with a time of 2:08.7. Don Brown won the half-mile in 1:54.4 and Halston Taylor won the open mile in 4.13. Mike Sheley won the 600-yard run in 1:12.5. John Brown placed second in the 880 with a time of 1:53.3 and Al Schoultz placed second in the 600 yard run with a time of 1:13. Ron Adams finished second in the high jump with a jump of 6-4. Swimming The Carolina swimming team lost to North Carolina 59-54 Saturday at the UNC pool. USC's Tom Schmidt won the 1000 yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle, which were back-to-back events. Chip Newman and Bob Cottam tied for first place in the 50 yard fieestyle. Newman and Schmidt also won the 100-yard freestyle and 500-yai freestyle, respectively. Ray Klitzke won the one-meter diving competition. It was the Chick's first win in two games at the Coliseum. The win of the game played as a preliminary to the USC-Dayton game raised the women's season record to 10-2. USC's two losses have come to Anderson Junior College. Carolina was paced by the scoring of Charlene DuBose, who had 18 points, Denise Nanney, who had 15 points and the floor play of guard Sherry Carter. Susan Johnson led Furman with 10 points. The Chicks played excellent team ball against Furman, con sistently passing to the open player underneath the basket for easy points. A full-court press by Carolina also contributed heavily to the game's outcome. The press Team Effoi in ViIIanoi Captain Brian Winters put it nicely after Carolina's recent victory over Villanova in Philadelphia's Palestra when he said, "Our strength is our balanced team effort." The 63-47 victory over Villanova did not come easy as Carolina was behind 29-24 at intermission and down by as much as 11 points in the first half. DuBose stole the ball at the midcourt line two straight times in the second half, both times drib bling in for easy layups. USC Coach Pam Backhaus was elated with the victory. "I'm very, very pleased. It was our best performance of the year. We didn't expect this to be such an easy win. Furman only lost to Anderson by 4 points. We had a lot of movement and played flawless defense. "Denise Nanney played her best game of the year and if I had to pick a most improved player it would be Denise ," Backhaus said. "She has really come on." Leading 53-18 at the end of the third quarter, Backhaus cleared her bench in the final period. The Chicks travel to Greenwood to play Lander Monday and travel to Winthrop Wednesdav for an important eame. rt Evident ia Game record this year (5-12) USC Assistant Coach Don Walsh had his team braced for a tough game. Walsh said later, "I admit Villanova is down, but this was Big Five Day, we were o:i the same card as the Notre Dame-LaSalle game, and the place was sold out for 3 months.
