THE WAY WE WERE REISAND REDFORD Shows 1 ..- '7- 9 Chicks Lose To Anderson in Coliseum BY BILLY BAKER Sports Writer Carolina's women's basketball team, officially nicknamed the Chicks, had its Carolina Coliseum debut spoiled by the Anderson Junior College Trotters 51-40 Monday night. After trailing 8-5 in the first eight minute quarter, the Chicks battled back in the second period to trail by one, 20-19, at halftime. Both teams used full-court press and man-to-man defenses often during the rivalry game. A 30-second clock is used in women's basketball, all fouls are shooting fouls and there is no back court violation either. Anderson worked the ball inside to its 6-3 center, Ruth Lee, who dominated the inside play throughout the game. She finished with 16 points to lead all scorers. The second half proved to be the Chicks downfall as costly tur novers plagued their hopes of a comeback. By the end of the third period Anderson led by six, 34-28. By outscoring Carolina 17-12 in the final period, Anderson upped its winning margin to 11, 51-40. The Chicks were led in scoring by Charlene Dubose, with 12 points, and Denise Nanney, with eight. Pam Backhaus, the Chicks head coach, said, "I was proud of our defense. We played well, but the shots just would not drop for us. I think playing Anderson is almost a curse because we lost to them once before this season at Anderson. "Last year we beat them during the regular season and then they beat us in the state tournament, so I hope we can reverse the situation and beat them in this year's tournament." The loss dropped the Chicks record to 7-2 on the season. They play Cl aflin at the Naval Armory this Friday night.
