Notre Dam Notre Dame tumbled from first to third when the press services announced their rankings this week, and that fall brings to mind the question of just what the polls are supposed to determine. Notre Dame, of course, gained the nation's top spot by upsetting the UCLA Bruins, 71-70, Jan. 19 at South Bend. Unfortunately for the outclassed Irish their schedule dictated a rematch with the Bruins the very next week, and as expected the Irish lost all contact with the top spot, UCLA winning easily 94-75. The absurdity of the situation lies in the fact that Notre Dame was picked to lose in the rematch by more than ten piints, and yet the pollsters had them ranked as the nation's top team going into the contest. The Bruins, for the first time in recent history, were ranked second. There was logic behind the move: Notre Dame was un defeated and was ranked second. UCLA was undefeated and ranked first. Notre Dame beat UCLA, therefore the Irish earned the top ranking. But is that valid thinking? Few really believed Notre Dame was the nation's best team. Even in Notre Dame's stunning upset win, UCLA dominated the vast majority of the game except for a critical lapse in the final minutes which cost them their 88-game winning streak. For example, Pittsburgh, with a 15-1 record, is ranked behind seven teams which have two or more defeats. Why then was Notre Dame placed in the top spot it not even expected to come within ten points of the number two team? The fact that Notre Dame was trounced only w questions the credibility the credibility of the polls. Even if the Irish "earned it," almost everyone in the nation, outside of South Bend, knew the Bruins of UCLA still were the nation's best team. Why didn't the polls show that?
