This semester promises to be one of the most newsorthy times that Carolina has had to offer. And you will notice quite a few changes and some new names on the masthead of this spring's Gamecock. Psyched Out TO THE EDITOR I had the dubious experience of taking the orals for the Master Degree in GIS, and frankly, I barely passed them. But it did not go without giving birth to a few thoughts. In my opinion, the only purpose of the orals for some Professors is to psyche you out. It was ironic for me to be subjected to an inquisition-like-type of vulgarity by a so-called expert in In ternational Affairs. After going through the trouble of taking the orals, I cannot help but feel deep sympathy for the future students who are bound to go through the same ordeal. What should be surprising for an observer is not that students should perform poorly, but that they should per form at all. Editor............ Managing Editc Editorial Page News Editor .... If we are to find a fairly con venient way to locate that mediocrity I advance the following proposition which I tested as far as the GIS Dept. is concerned: the further the Professor's office is removed from the center of power, the more intellectually oriented he is. Thus, in my department, you will have to go to the third floor of the building and bypass the second floor, in order to find such people. Only there can you brteathe some fresh air. What is tragic in this situation is that the good professor, with in tellectual humility and the tradition of centuries of humanism, is overshadowed and out-talked by big-mouthed per verts who are nothing but self styled Gods. It is against these "Gods" that we should rebel. The students, like Sisyphus, are MECO( Ei. .............. Like Sisyphus, again who revolted against his "Gods" their only way to overcome their tragic condition is by showing o contempt, and this is the only purpose of this letter. Name Withheld 'Slack' TO THE EDITOR: There is no better word than "slack" to describe the student records department at USC. For the past few years, the records department has been in conveiniencing the students by mailing grades during registration. How is the student to know what to register for if he hasn't seen his grades? When the freshman first enter USC he learns there are deadlines for everything: Termpapers, dropdates, ticket pickups, etc. Why not put the records depart ment under these stringent deadlines?
