DePauwi But Provi BY STEVE PARKER Sports Editor After playing DePaul for two straight seasons, USC's schedule maker decided to confuse Carolina's basketball fans and substituted DePauw for DePaul. The comparison of the two school's names is obvious, but a comparison of their basketball teams proves not so similar. DePauw's Tigers managed only an 8-18 record last season and the quality of their opponents hardly merits the dismal campaign. The Tiger schedule reads like a high school guidance counselor's listing of small colleges. Centre, Millikin, Illinois Wesleyan, and Rose-Hulman have been the Tiger opponents thus far IP KLEEN 1320 Main Street DRY CLEANING SPECIAL 2 pc. men's or lady's plair suits or dresses 4-day ser vice $1.44 eact MIX 'EM UP skirts -SWF-:ATFI-:S 4 l)a~ Servi 3_FOR $1.99 1320 Main Street Unique GIFT IDEA I a. None approaches the calibre of basketball that USC plays. DePauw is a member of the Indiana Collegiate Conference, which has produced. five NCAA champions in the last 17 years. The ICC powerhouses do not threaten UCLA, of course, because the conferences champions compete in the College division of the NCAA. DePauw went to the tournament in 1968, but the Tigers have enjoyed only a single winning season since then, none in the last four years. The Tiger team does stand to be greatly improved over that of a year ago, with nine experienced players returning, including several 'tall men. "I'd definitely say this is the tallest team we've ever had at DePauw," said Tiger Coach Elmer McCall. "Any starting lineup that "----mm-rmn 1 r I - I =? :nfusion Fhreat we'll put on the floor would be taller than any we've ever started before, including the 1967-68 team that went to the NCAA. "We have more depth in each position than I can ever remember here. Our squad is blessed with a bench, and it has more height and more strength without surren dering speed and quickness." Last year's leading scorer was the one letterman that the Tigers lost, as senior Gary Pittenger graduated along with his 17.2 scoring average. Guard Joe LeFevre, who averaged 14.9, returns but he was stricken with disease and he will see only spot duty early in the year. John Chin, 7.7 points a game, and Dave Buckingham, 2.9 points a game, figure to start in the back XHil featurir Van Go, Klee, gameco court. The tall Tiger front line will probably comprise of Dave Pluto, 6-9, Steve McCabe, 6-5, and Orrin Bargerhuff, 6-7. Last year's center, 6-5 Kyle Fort, who averaged 11.1 points, will have to battle to regain his lost starting berth. Carolina carries a 3-0 mark into the apparently easy game. USC's attack has been balanced thus far, with front liners Bob Mathias, Alex English and Mark Greiner picking up the team when guards Mike Dunleavy and Brian Winters are cold. Freshman Nate Davis has also sparked the team. p Li.
