Grantz was given Associated Press' Back of the Week award following his brilliant performance in Carolina's victory over Ohio University. Grantz set a school rushing mark with 260 yards on 24 carries in that game. The 10 touchdowns Grantz scored during the year also represents a Carolina record. Grantz produced 1,670 yards total offense despite missing two-and-a half games with an ankle injury. Grantz became only the second non-senior to win the team's MVP award. The presentation was made Tuesday evening at the annual Letterman's award banquet honoring the team. Dana Carpenter received the award as the team's top defensive player. Sports Editor Carolina has won at least 20 games .in each of the past five basketball seasons, but this year Coach Frank McGuire is hesitant about predicting 20 wins, mostly because USC will start four sophomores when it plays Toledo Saturday night in the Coliseum. Two of last year's key players All-America guard Kevin Joyce and seven-foot Danny Traylor have graduated, leaving McGuire with a gap he must fill with sophomores. Winters, 6-4, can also play forward, which he did numerous times last season, but as a guard he is considered an All-America prospect. "We know that English, Winters and Dunleavy can play with anybody," McGuire said this week. "But we're in about the same I position as we were last year when we opened the season at Tennessee as far as telling how good we'll be in competition." Last year McGuire used fresh men heavily in the opening game, and apparently he'll have no reluctance to use them against Toledo on Saturday. Chuck Sherwood, 6-9, is con sidered the key freshman this year for USC. With Mathias the tallest starter, McGuire believes he may have to use Sherwood when USC runs into a team with superior height, which will probably happen quite a bit. "And if Mathias gets into foul trouble we would go to Sherwood first," McGuire said. One big man USC has but can't use is transfer Tommy Boswell, 6 9, from South Carolina State. Boswell, who scored 32 points in USC's intra-squad game Monday, is ineligible this year. However, McGuire said Boswell will help USC's other big men. "Just playing against him in practice is going to help the other ~of on Tolent hances olayers," McGuire said. "He elped Sherwood a lot already." USC's experienced reserves nclude junior guard Jimmy Walsh, guard George Felton, ophomore forward Jim Clements, unior forward Tommy Cox, and enior forward Rick Mousa. Mousa and Cox have been in ured in pre-season practices and will probably miss the Toledo iame . However, when healthy )oth will be used a lot during the ;eason. With the lack of height, McGuire said USC will change its style of play con siderably. "Most teams 'will have a height adivantage over us," McGuire said. "We'll probably do a lot of pressing and use zone defenses to make teams shoot from the out side." In the past McGuire has always set 20 wins as the goal of his teams, but he says, "Twenty wins is going to be tough this time without a big man and with so many young players. But I don't like to lose and we aren't conceding anything at all right now."
