Sports Editor Carolina's cross country '.team is considered one of the favorites to win the State In tercollegiate Cross Country Championship Saturday morning at Furman. Baptist College will be USC's main competition in the five-team meet, according to Carolina coach Bill McClure. Clemson, Furman and The Citadel are the other teams entered. USC will be without their top runner, Jim Schaper, who sufferedmuscle spasms in his back last Saturday in a meet with Clemson and will not run in cross-country competition the rest of the season. "Jim is training with the team this week in practice," McClure said Wednesday, "but we've decided not to run him in competition until the track season." Schaper runs the half mile for USC's track team. Without Schaper, the Gamecocks are led by fresh man Halston Taylor, who was the individual winner last Saturday. Taylor, who holds the state high school mile-run record, is one of the favorites men tomk on mor plea tve Inote sevie ylon cae o d* inFv ns, opin Center opn. osev londaythroug apoitmnt Harriers in Meet to win the meet Saturday over the 5.2 mile Furman course. McClure said he thought Taylor's stiffest competition would come from Tony Atwell of Baptist and Clemson's Roy Kulikowski. Carolina has not run against Baptist this year, but against Clemson, Taylor finished first and Kulikowski was third behind Taylor and USC sophomore Bob Day. Besides Taylor and Day, USC's runners in the state meet will be Wayne Thomas, Don Layden, Rod Dalton, Gary Hill and Steve Landy. After the meet Saturday USC will send its top runners to the NCAA Regional meet Nov. 10. The regional will be run over a six-mile course also on the Furman campus. McClure said Taylor, Day and Thomas will run in the regional meet for certain and others may run if they have good races on Saturday. Baptist won last year's state meet while Carolina had three runners injured drop out of the race. "I think we have a good chance to win the state meet," McClure said. " We have good balance on the team and that should help us considerably."
