Bates R Just Rui BY MARSHALL SWANSON Contributing Editor Rumors that the general con tractor working on Bates House West has filed for bankruptcy and therefore can't finish the job are just that, rumors. Talk on campus had it that the H.L. Coble Construction Co. of Greensboro, N.C., couldn't afford -to pay a penalty fee for finishing the job late and have enough money left over to complete the building. The building was originally set for Sept. 1. occupancy. "Untrue," said Frank Belotte, Coble vice-president, when querried on the matter from his Greensboro office. "Absolutely untrue." Richard Lundy, job superin tendant at Bates West, also denied the charge. He added that he had not heard the rumor and had no idea where it originated. Lundy said he had some 68 men working on the building doing such chores as electrical finishing, trim painting, and setting cabinets. "Work is progressing as usual," he said, adding, "I'm still getting my paycheck from Coble." Lundy said 12 floors of the 14 story building would be completed Dec. 15 and the other two floors would be finished the first of the year." Evidently the rumors were spawned at Sandwood Lake Apartments in Dentsville where some 192 Carolina students are holed up until Bates West is finished. The students were lodged in the surrogate housing when Coble couldn't meet a scheduled September deadline for the structure. According to one Sandwood resident, some of the students lodged at the apartments are disgruntled at the possiblilty that Bates may not be finished in time for occupancy at the beginning of the Spring semester. "That wouldn't bother me though," she said. "I wanted to get an off-campus apartment this semester Ilut my parents wouldn't let me, so I signed up to live in Bates West. Now I've got an apartment anyway. I like it here just fine.'' Leventis said the reason the Student Senate passed resolution giving violators a 15 minute grace period was to unclog the courts. This grace period says no longer will a person have to appear in court for every small overtime violation, Now, the violation times will be added together until this person has a total of 15 minutes, then he has to go to court. "This resolution should save students time in court and facilate court procedures," said Leventis. "Trials in court must be scheduled for every twenty minutes. Say a trial for a thirty second open house violation lasts two minutes, the court has eighteen more minutes until the next trial is sheeduled to begin. "A move like this may sound silly or childish, but the senate thought this would be the best way to solve this type of problem." dar members.
