Alma e It. * "Maurie" At F( by Bob Craft The film "Maurie" starts today at the Fox Theatre downtown and if it makes it through the week, the folks at the theatre think it will be in for the winter. They are probably right. "Maurie" is the true story of Maurice Stokes, the Cincinnati Royals star basketball player who was stricken with some sort of brain damage and lost the use of the voluntary muscles of his body. Jack Twyman, team mate and oddly enough not one of Maurie's close friends, took responsibility for Maurie and became his guardian and a tireless raiser of funds for the $100,000 a year needed for therapy to partially restore Maurie his body. At the beginning of the film, Maurie has it all. The poor son of a steel worker in Pittsburgh, Maurie works his way up until he is named NBA Rookie of the Year. In winning this title, he is presented a car that he doesn't know how to drive. But as he is coming home with the engagement ring in his pocket, he is stricken and the long road of therapy and pain begin for Maurie. He finally regains the use of his voice and some of his muscles and all the time, Jack stands by him, encouraging him and sometimes badgering him to get well. I After 10 years of therapy and doctors, Maurie is finally able to attend "Jack Twyman Night", the last game that Twyman played before he retired and went into broadcasting. And there is a standing ovation as Maurie gets out of his wheelchair and manages to stand and bow to the crowd. "Maurie", a true story.
