Haines of the College of Engineering who, along with two graduate students, has undertaken this unique way of producing st-ing instruments. Two Minority Announced F BY TOMMY FOWLER Gamecock Staff Writer A free minority graduate student locater service has.begun for its second year at Carolina, with a hopefully more successful year than last, according to Dean of Minority Affairs, Charles L. Mc Millian. McMillian said eight or ten students used the service last year and four of those were placed in higher learning programs for graduate students. He explained the service as being "like a placement bureau without securing positions." Although there is no scholarship program accompanying the placement service, McMillian said "There are pretty fair chances the chosen institution will usually make some sort of financial assistance." Haines first started working on the project about a year ago. His interest in it is derived from Services >r Grads and student. Another program, of doctoral fellowships, was also announced by McMillian, for minority groups - Blacks, Mexican Americans, Native Americans, Puerto Ricans. Fellowship awards for 1974-75 will include the full tuition and fees required by the graduate school, an allowance of $300 for books and supplies, and a monthly stipend of $250 to help meet living costs. Provided that dependency can be sub stantiated, a married fellow may apply for an additional stipend of $50 for their spouse and each dependent child. Deadline for applying for the fellowship awards is January 5, 1974, and winners will be an nounced March 25. "If someone could come up with an in strument that is uniform in quality and is more reasonable in price than a regular one, then it would be of great importance to mankind," Haines said. A forester's wood was first tried by Haines, but did not yield the results he desired. Graphite epoxy was next tried and gave many of the properties that wood does. Epoxy is a black, sticky substance that has often been used in the making of airplane and ihelicopter blades. This cost is expected to drop, however, within the next three years. It is heated and then is corpressed into the shape needed for either a guitar or violin. "We are only working on the guitar base right now, Haines said, because it is easier to mold than a violin base." "Before we started molding the epoxy, we studied the properties of the wood used in the making of the Martin guitar. We then tried to simulate our findings with the epoxy and came out with a result that is better than natural wood. The epoxy guitar is more flexible% than a regular one and gives- off more definite acousticai sounds than a guitar made of wood." Haines feels that it may be another two months before he is ready to put the guitar together. The teeth of the Student Allocations Commission could be felt at the regular meeting of the Legislative Council of the Student Bar Association Tuesday night. Every decision the council made while discussing their budget depended on how the Student Allocations Com mission might react. Mitchell Willoughby, treasurer of the SBA read the budget the Executive Council had prepared last spring. He explained how the Legislative Council could transfer 10 per cent of the S. A. C. allocations between items in the budget, but shifting more than 10 per cent would require approval from the S. A. C. Next, committee chairman for three of the seven ac tivities funded by the SBA gave the adjusted budgets their committees would need for the coming year. These -chairmen represented the sncial committee, the athletic Student Bar Hashes New Budget Request committee, and the speakers committee. The athletic committee requested their budget be raised by some $485.00. LucyKnowles appeared on behalf of the Association of Women Law Students requesting that the SBA fund a trip for 2 representatives to attend the National Conference for Women in Law to be held in Austin, Texas in the .spring. Knowles said this association had requested funds from the SAC but had been told all their money must come from the bar association. The fact was brought out during the meeting that the law students pay a total of $22,950.00 through the activity fee taken from their tuition. Approximately one-fourth of this money goes back into the SBA treasury. . The Legislative Council took these budget requests into advisement until they can vote on them next week.
