Susannah Lufler was in General Studies for one year and decided to switch to education. In transition, only three of her 30 hours in General Studies were accepted by the College of Education. She has since returned to General Studies for her BGS degree. The USC Bulletin states: "Validation of terminal credits for the _ baccalaureate programs is left to the discretion of the dean in volved". What this is saying is that some courses offered in General Studies are not ac ceptable, or have no equivalents, in other bac calaureate programs. Dr. Bert Dillon, Dean of Arts and Letters, said "Many courses offered in general studies are for special pur poses that do not necessarily have any relevance to other programs. " The Dean of General Studies, Dr. H.E. Varney agrees, saying that GS does not offer courses with the same format as that in other colleges because that would amount to a duplication process which is not necessary. Assistant Dean Ada Thomas of Business Administration said, "Students transferring to the College of Business Admin istration from the College of General Studies have their records evaluated on an in dividual basis. The College of Registration Cards Due Today Today is the deadline for those campus organizations that have not turned in their registration cards for active status during the academic year 1973-74. Any campus organizations not turning in these cards today will have to appear before the Student Organization Chartering Commission for a return to active status. These cards may be mailed or returned to Robert Alexander, dean for student affairs, 212 Pendleton Building. For further in formation call 2780. fers Find F emic Snobbery' Ex Harry. E. Varney -Cdllege of General Studies Business Administration ac cepts, the recommendations of the individual departments concerning courses outside the College of Business Ad ministration." This leads to the crux of the problem. The General Assembly has said any graduate of a two-year technical program can come to Carolina and have all his credits transferred, whereas the only program intowhich a two-year graduate of this in stitution can go and have all his credits taken is the Bachelor of General Studies. As John Gardner in the t College of General Studies says, "You're worse off going in a two-year program at the University in terms of tran sferability of credits than you t Classifi LOST AND FOUND LOST: 2 anatomy books and a literature book by the Campus Shop. And we have all kinds of reasons to believe that the instruction we are giving here is far superior." When'asked why he thought there was this large discrepancy in policy, Gardner replied, "I think it is a kind of prejudice, a kind of academic snobbery, a bias against something that is more practical rather than in tellectual for the sake of being intellectual." Dillon proposed that each lepartment at the University evaluate each course from ach institution (whether echnical or the College of 3eneral Studies of Carolina) md determine which courses Yould be acceptable to bac :alaureate programs (other han the BGS). d Ads PROFESSIONAL typing, 10 yrs. experience, termpapers, etc. $.50 dbl. sp. pg.
