Mauro labled this year's recruits "a bunch of athlete's with real class. Individually they are some of the finer athletes ever recruited at Carolina." The USC froah program has undergone changes. With the new NCAA rule allowing freshman to become eligible for varsity competition , fresh man coaches all over the country are receiving much pressure. Instead of having a full year to teach and condition an athlete they now have as little, time as it takes for the athlete to make the varsity. Ac cording to Mauro, eight fresh man players have already been promoted to the varsity squad. Mauro said "all these errors can be expected when a team plays together for the first time." Mauro said all four quar terbacks, Ron Bass, John Shealy, Chris Cowan, and Scott Curtis all looked "pretty good," but that the starting position is up for grabs.
