Dr. David Hessler, I SC director, said the center's "whole idea is to coordinate media activities on campus, provide the capability to implement new instructional strategy and provide a facility where students and faculty accomplish services for university activities. ''The department will be involved with video and slide production, and we are hoping for a centralization of filmmaking equipment, maintenance and repair, ," Hessler said. "We want to avoid duplication of equipment between.departments . Although we can.'t eliminate all the petty jealousies that exist between departments, we would like to be an assisting agent in equipment selection." Working in cooperation with the new Media Arts Institute, which will coordinate academic film courses, the ISC plans to USC Choi Choral Director Arpad Dora,s was surrounded this week by fellow enthusiasts of the innovative teaching techniques advanced by the late Hungarian musical genius, tutor 781-0971 nal Services campus. Equipment for students' use will be supplied during the workshops' duration. "We do have the equipment and don't want it to just sit around and rot -- we want people to use it. "Our major role is to act as a catalyst in the change process. We will produce, acquire and instruct in media usage, as well as provide a variety of aud io-visual instructional aids. "The equipment we hope to centralize will be used by all departments," Hessler said, "and we hope to have a free flow of information about new techniques and their applicatlon." Although the ISC will begin operations this fall, Hessler said they would not have the ''capability for walk-in self-production" by students and faculty until January. Beginning September, the ISC will be partially housed in the Educational Development Center on Main Street, which will hold the Media Arts Institute, USC-Ely, graphics and Hessler's office, and partially in the Coliseum, which rPer forms Zoltan Kodaly. Facilities there will include two TV-film production studios, darkrooms, graphics center, film library, and central equip ment repair. A con sul tation-demonstration area for new products and techniques will also be included. "The Instructional Services Center is not a University department nor a college, and it is not under a department or college," Hessler emphasized. "It is for the entire University and operate in the Division of Educational Services, which is headed by Associate Provost N.C. Mitchell. "The faculty here has shown an unusually positive outlook for new instructions and seeing the potential for new innovations," Hessler said. "Since we are starting at such a basic level with coordinating media activities, USC has a good opportunity to grow effectively in media technology."
