De onge C Underrated BY HARRY HOPE I decided to take a break from bar-hopping Monday night and go - over to Rutledge Chapel for the USC Chamber Orchestra concert. I had not heard the group in a year or so. They have Improved. The orchestra Is composed of strings, and there Is something about the sound of a small string orchestra in the Rutledge Chapel surroundings which recalls the feel ing of intimacy for which the mu sic was originally intended. Italian baroque music has a sunny ami ability which defies things like rainy nights and city noise. The opening number, a Sinfonis for Strings by Tomaso Albinoni, was in this vein. The strong open ing number was well-done. The featured work of the con cert was Bach's Cantata No. 82, "Ich habe genug," ("I've Had Enough") performed by Donald Gray, baritone, with Connie Gray, flute, and the orchestra, minus it; bass. Gray is a good baritone, and seemed comfortable with the Bach. The only trouble was that, al times, the orchestra covered hh lower notes. But the small cantatg was well-done. Cary Watts has been solo violin. ist and member of the orchestri for two or three years now. Hei playing has inproved, but she stil seems nervous doing solo work She was the soloist in Francesc Veracini's Concerto for Violin anc Orchestra. Her closeness to thi orchestra and Its conductor, alonj with her playing, provided verl good results. Irchestra: USC Group The closing number was a Vi valdi concerto In A minor for Or gan and Orchestra. The late Igor Stravinsky said that Antonio Vi valdi was the only composer who ever wrote the same thing 600 times. Maybe, maybe not, but Vi valdi best exemplifies the sunny amiability mentioned earlier. The organ soloist was Kristin Johnson, and she stayed with the orchestra despite the fact that the manual is In a loft at the back of the auditorium and so, behind the conductor. I had not heard her play before. She was very good. Jerry Curry's harpsichord con tinuo was well done. It's good that de Jonge did not overlook this im portant and characteristic part of a Baroque performance. Before the appearance of the conductor in the late 18th century and early 19th century, it was the harpsi chordist. who kept the orchestra together. It was direction as well as the sound that was a part of-this music. And a Baroque orchestra concert without a harpsichord is a little like daiquiri without the rum-something's missing. As usual, Frits de Jonge and his people have provided a good musical performance-a refreshing aspect of musical life at Carolina which is too often overlooked or ignored by University Union cli ques. Thank God the orchestra does not depend upon the Union for its support. The USC music department sponsored the concert. POLICY: Cost: Five cents per word. Minimum: 10 words. Pat Tyler, Gamecock litor for next fall, appeared be )re the board to answer any uestions that might be raised. The major questions centered round the fact that the new sy tem will be somewhat expensive nd board members questioned te feasibility of students handling that enlarged amount of respon ibility." Tyler said that students will be rained to run the new machines nd some of the typists will come rom USC's work-study program. le also said that Susie Green, me ]a co-ordinator, would take on dded responsibility for the ma hines and Dean Robert Alexander ecommended a raise for her "to eflect this added duty." The new equipment may pos ibly be used with the Garnet and flack and Crucible, Tyler said, ,nd although the initial cost of he machines would be high, it vould work out into a money aving business in a year or so. After being Jssured that the empany would take the machines ,ack If the new system did not york out well, the board approved yt the purchase with one dissent ng vote. As its final action, the board ecknowleged receipt of a letter rom an old alumni protesting the 'centerfold" picture in the Garnet md Black and the "emphasis on mex," but did not feel serious ac :ion was warranted. chlas mure tsr s flUe.
