USC Thec BY BETTY WO6DRUP After 12-hour workdays and only three weeks of rehearsal, the USC Summer Theatre will open its production of "Show boat" at the Myrtle Beach Con vention Center Saturday night. Although the show will be gi ven at the Convention Center, all preparatory work was done 'lt Myrtle Beach Junior High School because of the advance schedule of the Center. With the costume shop set up in the Home Ec classroom and the stage design in American his tory, the rehearsals take place in -the school gym. There, director Russell 'Green has made tape markings on the floor to outline the Convention Center stage and the offstage actors and dancers can'rest on the bleachers in the near 900 heat of the gym. Cast and crew stay at a con verted motel on the outskirts of Myrtle Beach. "We take up the whole place," said Jay Kennerly, stage technician. "People keep driving through looking for rooms, but the theatre has it all." This, however, could be a prob lem, as several cast members seem doubtful over the benefits of having six people in a room. "The motel is fairly crowd ed," said Erin Wertenberger, cos tume designer. "Most of the rooms have four persons in them and some have six. But we're not there at all during the day." He also said that he, Green.and other USC theatre faculty at the beach do not stay in the same motel. MOE a Britche TheP a BLUE DENIM . "The 'ost trouble we've had is with time," Wertinberger said.. "They rehearse from 9 in the morning until i1 at night, with two hours for lunch and one for supper. - Transportation is bad too, since the motel we're staying at is fairly far from here." The weather has also caused some problems, said Kennerly, "because the paint for the sets isn't drying in all this humidity and rain we've had." Set con struction is .being done at the motel because of a convention. at the Center. Later, he said, all sets will have to be moved. Wertinberger also said that a - little less than half the large cast of singers and dancers was.from USC. "Most of these persons came from the Southeastern The atre Auditions or are. down here taking courses for college credit, which we are giving in four areas this summer."* The two USC students in principal parts are Jimm Coxx, who plays Captain Andy of the Showboat, and Lowrey Green, who portrays a cast member of th4 Showboat's slapstick theatre. "Showboat", the third USC summer production at Myrtle 7 Beach, will run nightly at the Convention Center, except Mon days, at 8:30 p.m. Tickets will be $3.50 for adults and $1.50 for students.
