Carolina's baseball Gamecocks remain idle during the examination break before returning to action for four consecutive games beginning May 9, three of which will be home affairs. USC's season record currently stands at 23-14, just two victories less than last season's school record 25 wins (25-16). The similarities between this sea son's baseball squad and that of last year are strong-both teams started swiftly, stumbled to the break-even mark around the mid-point of the campaign, before finishing with an impressive winning surge. At one point last season, the 25-16 Carolina squad held merely an 11-11 standing. This year, the Gamecocks stood just 12-11 after a 4-1 loss to Stetson. But in similar fashion to their performance of a year ago, Carolina's squad has come on strong, (seven in a row at one point) to build an impressive mark. Now USC's Gamecocks have the Dpportunity to shatter the previous record for baseball wins in a season, needing just two wins in four games to tie the mark. The reason for the Gamecock surge of late is obvious-the strong pitching that has held up all season for Carolina has now been joined by some very good hitting, which was previously absent. The most marked improvement )f a USC batter is that of Hank 3mall. The slugging first baseman ,vas hitting merely .211 13 games 1go, but by batting .415 over that )eriod he has raised his average to 281. But Small's hot bat has not just ided his average, it has also con ributed significantly to the team's vinning. Small has knocked five omeruns and 13 RBI over the 13 ame stretch. Freshman outfielder Steve King as also been displaying some nprossive hitting during the win treak, raising his average from the !40's where it hovered early this ear to .286. King's 13 RBI are third igh on the squad, following Small's B and Bruce Pudlock's 17. John Gambrell has kept his aver ge over .300 all season long, with now at .333. Gambrell has hit over 100 in both of his previous amecock seasons. FEATURES: 1:30-3:30 NG 5:30-7:30 9:30 .
