Season Recc Rival BY STEVE PARKER Sports Editor Clemson's ace pitcher Steve Cline withstood a last-inning comeback threat by the Gamecocks to guide the Tigers to victory and send USC further into a slump which seems to be dominating the entire season, Wednesday night at the Rex Enright diamond. The Carolina loss to the Tigers, 4-2, was their second in a row as The Citadel defeated the USC squad 4-3 on Tuesday night. The two set backs followed the Gamecock's vic tory in their home night opener on Monday over Western Carolina, 10 2, and dropped the USC mark on the year to just 11-10. Although Clemson had gained control of the game in the very first inning when they jumped on Gamecock starter Alan Hilliard for four runs, Carolina did attempt a serious comeback and actually had their two power hitters, Stevd King and Hank Small, at the plate as the potential winning runs in the last inning. Jeff Grantz began the rally attempt by singling sharply to left with one out. Pinch-hitter Frank Matusek followed with another single as his grounder to third struck the bag and bounded high into the air and was unplayable by Clemson's third-sacker. But with the tying runs on base, and the winning one coming to the plate in Carolina's power threats, Clemson pitcher Cline began a reenactment of "Casey at the Bat" by fanning King. He handled Small just as easily by getting the Atlanta native to tap feebly back to the mound for the final putout. Cline limited USC to just four hits as he worked the complete game, striking out 12 and walking five, while giving up just two runs. Carolina stranded nine runners during the course of the contest, and only Robby Rogers was able to take advantage of having runners in scoring position as he drove home the two runs in the fourth inning with a single to left. Hilliard, who entered the game with a record of 4-0 but absorbed his first defeat, gave up four runs in the first inning on a walk, single, double. and homerun. Hilliard was relieved by Allen Johnson in the first inning and his showing was quite good as he pitched 8.1/ifinings, giving up no runs on three hits, and he too mas tered the strikeout pitch by fanning seven. But Johnson's fireman show was not enough as Clemson had already secured all the runs they needed during their onslaught on Hilliard.
